NOT a good idea to drive a nice car while you are still in school. I got a $100.000 car while I was in school, most teachers started giving me attitude and they would ignoor me if I would ask a question in class, and some would just give me an A for every project that I did. It was not fun. I'm so happy that Im DONE.

hmm. i'll second the smart car...
otherwise get a vespa.
i only put 2000 miles on my car/year. it's getting hard justifying keeping it, but i can't imagine any other way to escape the city and partake in the activities i really enjoy (hiking, camping, skiing, etc)

or if you've got the coin, pimp out an audi A3

A little 3 wheelin' on the weekends...if you are going to get something, get something fun! what's this thing with Architects and Volvo's and Saab's!

Mar 30, 07 7:58 am  ·
 ·

my love affair with volvos started when i moved to town with no car, lived for 6 mos w/o and realized that it really didn't work, had no money, and found a '76 242, lemon yellow, for $800. i think it may have been the best car i have ever had. i kept it for 4 yrs until i traded up to an '86 245 ($3500).

stayed in volvos until i bought my hybrid. waiting for a volvo hybrid, but probably won't be able to afford THAT until it's ten years old.

Thanks for posting that link, agfa8x. That's an important fact that most people are not aware of, and the Japanese car companies certainly won't tell them. A particulate filtered diesel is the only green option now, especially a Bluetec once they become more widely available. The VW Polo BlueMotion is the most eco-friendly car out now.

that article on the prius was facinating.

If you want eco, or just want to save a ton on gas, a small diesel is probably the best way to go.

ive heard that the new prius 09 will use Li ion batteries instead of NiCd batteries. perhaps thats a little cleaner to build. or maybe even worse.

I'm a huge Honda fan. Hands down they make the best small engines out there...and I consider a 4 cyl a small engine. Back in the late 70's their engines ran so efficient that they could pass CA emissions with no cat converter. They have only improved things since then. Highest MPG CAFE ratings of any car company. And their cars are tops in quality to boot. Can't go wrong.

Sure BlueTec and Blue Motion are great, but Honda's system is far superior...and will require NO Maintenance vs urea based systems (DCX and VW)
Honda is the cleanest car manuf. in the world (mass prod.)

(Next-Generation Diesel Engine)
Honda has developed a next-generation diesel engine that reduces exhaust gas emissions to a level equal to a gasoline engine. The new diesel engine employs a revolutionary NOx catalytic converter that enables a reduction in NOx emissions sufficient to meet stringent U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier II Bin 5 emissions requirements (based on Honda calculations). Honda plans to introduce its next-generation diesel engine in the U.S. within three years.

(Fuel Cell-Powered Vehicle)
Honda has held a demonstration drive of the next-generation FCX Concept fuel cell vehicle, an earlier version of which was shown at the 2005 Tokyo Motor Show. The FCX Concept now features a newly developed compact, high-efficiency Honda FC Stack. Limited marketing of a totally new fuel cell vehicle based on this concept model is to begin in 2008 in Japan and the U.S.

(Flexible Fuel Vehicle (FFV))
Honda has developed a new flexible fuel vehicle (FFV) system that enables gasoline engine-based power plants to operate on either 100% ethanol or a wide range of ethanol-gasoline fuel mixtures. In late 2006, Honda plans to begin sales of FFVs in Brazil, where bio-ethanol has gained popularity.

(Advanced Gasoline Engine)
Honda has further improved its VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control System) technology with the development of the Advanced VTEC engine, which provides high performance along with outstanding fuel economy and lower emissions. The new engine combines continuously variable valve lift and timing control with the continuously variable phase control of VTC (Variable Timing Control) to achieve a world-leading level of performance and a 13%* improvement in fuel efficiency. Honda plans to release a production vehicle equipped with the new engine within three years.
* Engine only, as compared to production 2.4-liter i-VTEC engine

sirgemhl, I don't know if Lithium batteries are cleaner or not, but they still make chemical waste. The batteries are just one part of why hybrids are bad. Hybrids are, and probably always will be, a negative alternative.

aquapura, most car experts agree that CAFE is bad. Just read the current Letter from the Editor in Motor Trend magazine. I don't know how you judge quality, but it's certainly not how I do it. I'm always disappointed by Honda cars' cheap plastics.

J3, like everything you posted is straight from Honda's advertisements.

We're looking at individual models here, not whole brands, so who cares if they have the best average?

I haven't heard of any problems with the urea based system, but Bluetec engines also meet the new EPA standards. Mercedes and VW, however, will already have their models out next year in the US, not in three years. Plus, Honda makes hybrids, which we already know are bad from the above link.

Honda is not the only fuel-cell company. Mercedes started work on fuel-cells years before anyone else. Fuel-cells are my favorite technology, but leave it out of this discussion until its mass production. Ironically, because of the Japanese companies' focus on hybrids, companies like Mercedes have had to take R&D funding away from fuel-cells and move it into hybrids to appease a stupid public. Basically, the badness of hybrids strikes a double punch. They pollute more now, and prolong pollution by postponing fuel-cells.

The FFV, again, who cares? I don't think any of us live in Brazil.

Many companies have a variant of VTEC, they just call it something else. BMW calls it Valvetronic, for example. Plus, it's not the only way to get performance plus better emissions. Look at Audi's FSI.

Everybody has their own methods. Everybody wants to make money. They just have different ways of getting it.

If you want my personal opinion, get a diesel Audi. The best quality (i.e. the least cheap plastics), durable, great resale value, good mileage.

I'll let ya'll know how we like the lil fit when we git it. seems to be the best bang for the buck between air bags, abs, and comfort. didn't like the dash or drive of the yaris. the versa was really fun but hard to find with similar equipment to the fit (and an even longer wait in minnesota).

maybe my next bike will be one of these:

cryzko- after the pic's url, type in: ' width=418' (that is one space before width) before the closing [ /url ] for posts, in the news section use =300 for the pixel size...

i have a CRV...1996; does good gas - most importantly consistent

I would love to get an old MG - the poor man's Aston Martin

but seriously folks my MINI recommendations stand. I'm not a big fan of hybrids because they haven't tackled the waste issue properlly already there has been BIG stick about exports to Bangeldesh of used ones...3rd world gets stuck with the bill again

architec - could you elaborate on the waste issue and "3rd world gets stuck w/bill" ...I am sincerely interested in the subject. I have considered the hybrid option and would like to hear your take on it...

hybrids use a combination of fuel combustion + battery power. For the latter it requires the use of larger if not multiple batteries. Many of those batteries have a self life of less than a decade...some much less. The contents of many of these batteries aren't allowed to be sent to some of the recycle/dump/waste sites in US; nor across states to those that will. Often enough waste like that gets "exported" (i'm using that term loosely) to third world countries either as waste or as an import with some economic or scientific return (call it research). Lately much of these items have been found in sections of asia, africa, and latin america - where a hybrid usually refers to something else other than a car.

the point is that unless hybrid cars can utilize McDonough's cradle to cradle concept, through their manufacture, use, and recycle at least of the dangerous elements, then they too are contributing to the problem
