I think that "no culture" is a bit too strong... there is a brain-drain problem where most of the talent goes a few miles north to LA, but there are a few serious things happening in the art and music world down in San Diego (I am writing this from LA, of course).
I think a more serious problem is the lack of a top-tier architecture school. Woodbury just isn't really cutting it right now.
One parting shot-- it's also easily the most affordable costal city in california.
San Diego Firms
Anyone know of any firms in San Diego doing decent design?
let me know.
Chris
Estudio Teddy Cruz
Rob Wellington Quigley
Jonathan Segal
PUBLIC
and there are a lot more...
...but there seems to be a downturn/contraction in the San Diego real estate market, so I dont know how busy SD firms would be right now.

There's a really nice modern movement in San Diego.
Teddy Cruz is doing some amazing work. He had a lecture here at ASU last semester and he is somebody I would love to work for!
yeah, same with jonathon segal.
but there is no culture in s.d. i've got family there - it's a great escape and that's about it.
