Hey everyone, I'm going to be in Atlanta for a few days just to take a vacation from the everyday grind. I'm interested to eat some good ole southern food, and see the sites. Anyone have any good suggestions. Take it easy, and thanks for the heads up.
Piano extension to the High Museum (originally by R.Meier)
The Aquarium just south of the Olympic part - too pricy to see whales inland
beyond that I'd say give a local practice a call and see some of their work (chances are they won't respond for some off reason)
mack and merrill do a lot of good work around atlanta. Love it or hate it you can check out one of the largest urban infill projects to date, Atlantic Station.
If you came 2.5 months earlier, you could have gone to Mulligan's and had a 1/4 burger, wrapped in bacon and served between a sliced re-fried krispy kreme donut (instead of bread).
for your soul food fill - silver skillet (two blocks from 85 on 14th st)
for amazing cuban sandwiches - kool corner (two blocks west of skillet on 14th)
for good shopping - little five points
for a good time - clairmont lounge, say hello to blondie!
for nightclub - compound
oh yeah, everybody's been talking about compound... I second lil' five, check out savage pizza, best calzones i've ever had. When your done with that go to criminal records next door and see how much money you can blow on awesome music.
Carver's Grocery - The line wil be out the door, but somehow a seat will open up when you order. Be brave and request a double helping of the Macaroni and Cheese, but leave time for a nap in the afternoon.
others:
Six feet under
Harold's BBQ (by the prison)
Fat Matt's BBQ
edgewood animal is correct in naming carver's #1, but he should also be well aware that you're not supposed to tell anyone about it, its already overcrowded....2 demerits.
Visit the Hyatt Regency and Marriott Marquis at the Peachtree Center for some incredible atrium spaces, as chintzy as Portman's stuff is.
Also, the Peachtree Center MARTA station is a very cool subway station blasted out of solid granite, with the rock left exposed inside the main part of the station.
'good ole southern food' -check Mary Mac's, its almost too 'olde' for me;
check Daddy D'z barbecue off memorial drive, and while you're there go to Eyedrum--one of the best* artspaces in town.
*read cheap, lowkey, down to earth, mixed-media installations
little five points is played like poker;
try the east atlanta village farther south on moreland + flat shoals
if you like pricey art check the castleberry hill district;
nitelife: down 'n' dirty? check the new lenny's spot on decatur st, or MJQ on ponce de leon, or the EARL in east atl.
clean 'n' classy? try the compound, eleven50, and body tap, flashers or the pink pony.
old school atlanta- the sweet auburn + edgewood areas
tourist spots- lenox mall (though you might see T.I. or dem franchize boys), underground atlanta (though neighboring fairlie-poplar district is good walking), and the whale spot: GAquarium

Clairmont Lounge. Best place in town since the Gold Club closed.
do not leave ATL without going to Clairmont!

If you have the money for it:
South City Kitchen
for the true atlanta experience, you should sit in traffic for 2 hours.
other than that, you should definately eat at the flying biscuit. the indigo girls own it and it's some good soul food.
lol elvis. The traffic there is brutal
Ahh also talk a look at the MARTA station at Indian Creek; bigfat details
don't miss Club Uranus

The Buckhead Library by Scoggin & Elam is worth seeing...

Get in a car and escape Alanta drive north to Highlands, North Carolina and look up homes designed by Jim Fox.

holla
I would suggest eating at the ikea, best scandanavian food in Atlanta
guffaw
Bronson, isn't the pink pony a strip joint? I hear its the best in the city.
yes it is, but i wouldn't put it in the category of 'clean n classy'...not that ive been there or anything.
little 5 played out huh. atlanta how you've changed.
also, Body Tap should not be considered 'classy'. I live next to it and, well, I wouldn't call it classy.
yeah? well different strokes for different folks.
oh, and check out strokers, too.
**all future sarcasm will be properly noted or cited as such**
