i already told the story in another thread of when i had a precinct walker in chicago's 46th ward tell me -- flat out -- that i could go ahead and vote in chicago even though i was registered in texas.

another story i like about chicago voting is when my wife and i were -- this is a true story -- registered in separate wards even though we had the exact same address. my wife was in the 42nd and i was in the 2nd ward. the ward boundary went right down the middle of our bed, i guess. and the county clerk's office told me it wasn't a typo.

i'm going throw my vote at the governator and run out of the booth yelling..."See you at the party, richter!!!!"

not that i feel voting should necessarily be easy...but i've always wondered why election day isn't actually some kind of holiday where everybody gets work off, votes then spends the afternoon in sports bars watching the returns come in. if voting is such an integral piece of our culture then why not celebrate it?

and for that matter, why isn't leap day (29 feb) also a holiday? we get an extra day every four years and we spend it working?...wtf

that is a hilarious ochana.

lb, while my pup did not run for office, a friend of mine ran in a primary this year. my friend was running for state rep of my district. she calls me up one day and has scheduled a photoshoot so that she has some photography to use for her campaign. she wanted to know if lula could be apart of the shoot. cute dog = caring politician. i said sure. when is it? well, you have to be at my house on saturday at 7a. ouch, but okay. i wake up about 4a sick to my stomach. no, i wasn't out drinking. vomit. go back to sleep. vomit again a little later. wake up at 6.15a. drag my ass to her neck of the woods. ask to use her bathroom like 5 times. thankfully, i never got sick. that would have been totally embarrassing, but i was sweating the entire time and looked horrible. before the shoot was about to start, the photographer asks with a straight face "so, are you going to be the dog's owner in the shoot?" i just said "excuse me, i need to use the bathroom." unfortunately, my friend lost the primary. she'll be back though. she's an awesome lady with great ideas.

i am voting as i always do. one of the few things i said i'd do when i became an american citizen.
i am not a democratic voter anymore as i was never a republican. i decided it wasn't my choice anymore when democratic party became too much like the republican party.
i am going to vote case by case and individual by individual.
i will vote for jerry brown for attorney general of california. and yes on prop h for low income housing in los angeles.
dems should leave the center and start taking some serious steps in defence of the poor and disfranchised, instead of apoligizing all the time so they won't look too liberal or radical whatever. what happened to affordable healthcare?
we spend too much money in iraq on some lies that we could provide free health care for almost all of our population.

Why is there not a National Voting Day? everyone get the day off to vote. lots of folks can't get off of their two jobs to stand in a line for 2 hours. we have a national holiday for silly ass shit like Columbus Day, what is more important/democratic/celebrating America than voting? Give the people a chance.

So Sorry he is the American Ambassador to Germany:President Bush nominated Ohio industrialist and major GOP contributor William Timken, Jr. in July 2005 to serve as ambassador to Germany. The post had previously been held by former Republican Sen. Daniel Coats.

The long-time head of the Timken Company, an automotive and industrial parts manufacturer, Timken was previously nominated by President Bush to serve as chairman of the Securities Investor Protection Corporation. Timken’s decision to shutter three Canton-area factories and cut nearly 1,300 jobs became fodder for Democrats during the 2004 campaign. One year before the layoffs, Bush visited a Timken plant to tout his job creation plan. Although Timken is of German descent, he has no diplomatic experience and does not speak German. According to a White House spokesperson, the president chose Timken because of his reputation as an “experienced executive.”

Timken and his immediate family made $568,239 in federal political contributions during the 2000, 2002 and 2004 election cycles. Of that total, $12,000 went directly to the Bush campaigns and another $100,000 went to the first Bush inaugural committee. Separately, Timken’s company directed $250,000 to the president’s second inaugural committee. None of the family's contributions went to Democrats. Timken also served as finance co-chair of the president’s re-election effort in Ohio and was listed as a Bush Ranger for the 2004 campaign, a title given to those who raised more than $200,000 for the president.

*Figures represent contributions from the individual and his/her immediate family from 1999-2004. Total includes donations made to Republican candidates and party committees, as well as the Bush-Cheney recount fund formed after the 2000 election and Bush's two inaugural committees.

ochona - ahh, chicago voting. I remember trying to explain chicago politics to a basque separatist in france, "So... she is dead, but can vote... for Kerry?"

puddles - leap day should definitely be a holiday! I'd vote for that platform!

treekiller - in the MN-5th I don't like either Ellison (democrat) or Fine (republican), but there is a strong 3rd party canidate, Tammy Lee (independence) who actually has a platform and doesn't have any skeletons in her closet. Rather than pick the "lesser evil" of the major parties I often go with the 3rd party.

I don't so much care about who will "shake up" Washington, but I do care about who will deliver for us back here in the district they come from. One complaint about Ellison is while he'll cause commotion in Washington he doesn't have the experience to deliver for Minnesota. That was the same complaint about Wellsone, he captured headlines but did nothing for the people, aside from being another Democrat party line vote, which in my book is just as bad as a Republican party line vote. The retiring rep Sabo (D) endorsed the 3rd party canidate for that reason. That's one thing I like about MN politics. More than in other states politicians actually stand up for what's in the state's best interest, rather than the political party.

A- hmmm, now I have to think about my vote... MN has the best public discussions about politics, it seems like every race has two or three broadcast debates, that even the local fox affiliate takes time to highlight.

I've been appreciating Hutchenson's platform more and more as the other gubernatorial candidates start slugging each other with baseball bats... I should take advantage of being a new resident to the state since my vote didn't make the mess around here.

When will Cameron Sinclair run for Senate?

Minnesota politics is pretty progressive - except for the governorship, which is decided by best two out of three falls.

I'm voting right now! Plenty of local issues to care about, like the proposed jail expansion right across the street from me, the decriminalization of certain victimless crimes, and a heated race for county commisioner.

While I have been known to sarcastically say 'if voting made a difference it wouldn't be legal' I actually believe that it is the LEAST you could do. The system wont fix itself, and silence implies that you are perfectly happy with things how they are.

absolutely am going to vote next week. i can understand the desire to cast a 'protest' vote by not voting, but you just can't be apathetic about the whole thing and not vote at all.

you've just got to do it. pick the lesser of two evils if that's what soothes your soul...

Treekiller - yeah, MN politics are fun compared to other places. Have lived in areas that lean heavily on each end where in each case there really isn't any political discussion. I also appreciate how 3rd parties have a voice in this state. With each election more of my vote is going to 3rd parties as I don't really have confidence in either major party doing much more than the status quo.

Nice to see you mention Hutchinson for gov. I also like Fitzgerald for senate as I can't really stand either of the major party canidates in that race either.

I'll stop before I threadjack anymore. Going out of town this weekend. Will be home by Tuesday morning to cast my ballot.

Snook - I have no idea who exactly is running in MN - However, I would like to see the wrasslin' match between Running Gay and Lumber Jacks for the governor's title.

I live in chicago, and am planning on voting as many times as they'll let me...
