this is a terrible showing by those of archinect. do you people not realize that by not doing this sort of thing on a reasonable basis that you are contributing to the degradation of our society?
I run about 4-6 miles 4 times a week about 8.5 mph, or try to anyway. What could I do to get to into the shape necessary for a marathon. I want to run NY and then Boston.
Yeah, that scares me, I actually enjoy running quite a bit and if I buy books and get all uptight about it I am afraid I will stop liking it. le bossman, where ya at?
i run a few miles every other day, but i don't think i could do any marathon. my knees would just hate me the next day. good luck everyone. we want to hear back after the race.
puddles ran the detroit marathon i do believe. he is disgusting. a month or so ago he had a 16mi run that he turned into a full 26.2 marathon distance just for the heck of it, and finished in 3:17, seven minutes short of qualifying for boston. that little stint was technically his first marathon. ever.
actually the only things that worries me about new york are the bridges. i haven't been training that rigorously; i'm hoping i haven't lost any more time than i did in school (i was out for three weeks last time due to an injury). also, i'm counting on the altitude factor; i've been training where i live in montana, which is a 5000 feet.
I'm a sprinter....always have been! Following in my mom's footsteps but it will be hard as she ended up with two gold metals a silver and a bronze at the America Games in Pittsburg, PA last Summer.
Bossman
I'm one of those rookies who caught the running bug at SFO marathon last year! The final year at uni this year was brutal... I had to cut down on training and I don't know how you managed to run two marathons in GRAD school.
Counting down to run across the harbour bridge in 11 hours...
My race went terribly, terribly wrong... it was humiliating!
If there are any novice runners reading this thread, I would ask them to learn from my mistakes.
Net time of 2 hours and 37 minutes... I ran the first 10k in under 45 minutes but I hit the wall straight after I finished crossing the bridge at about 14-15km. I think I was a little paranoid of not making the cut off time for crossing harbour bridge because it had to reopen to the traffic by certain time and I had already started about 15 minutes after the actual gun time (don't ask). I almost crawled to the finish line and I was in a lot of pain...
Basically I think I have almost all of the symptoms of different running injuries that is known to man, and it really hurts to stare at a pair of my new nikes that I might never get to wear again... sigh.
I'll be watching the marathon from my apartment window, as the race passes directly below. I have considered attempting the marathon quite seriously a few times, as I'm an avid cyclist I have done a lot of centuries and double centuries. Running is just too brutal for me personally, and I have enormous respect for all of you runners. For lack of a more descriptive word - running is mentally and physically draining. I have no problem at all riding my bike 100-200 miles in good time, but after running as little as 5 miles I feel dead. The mental aspect of running is something I can never get my head around. Good luck on Sunday I'll be the annoying gent in Bay Ridge hanging out the window with a Nikon.
I dreamed, I was winning the NYC Marathon....but damn some Brazilian just floated past me in the last quarter mile.....just my luck....shouldn't have eatten the moon-pie before going to bed.
so, which one of you is in this year? i'm actually doing chicago this time, a far easier race. this might be my best marathon yet, as long as my sister can keep up. i just did my peak 20 mile run yesterday.
NY Marathon--who's with me?
Who else is running the ING NY Marathon this year?
Maybe next year - did Chicago last weekend and it was a blast!
Maybe next year.
one of our AFHers is running it. we are making 'running for humanity' t-shirts (though not in the xxxxl size - sorry chili)
getting ready ...

I didn't know architects had any time to exercise... but I'll be running the Akl marathon this weekend!
I will be in the Hummer Leading the Pack.....of runners! Ya right!
ha. i ran (2) marathons during grad school, and i had a part-time job.
i might watch a little bit of it...
le bossman how do you train?

buy this book:
http://www.amazon.com/Marathon-Ultimate-Training-Hal-Higdon/dp/1594861994/sr=1-3/qid=1161958391/ref=sr_1_3/002-9375026-4983208?ie=UTF8&s=books
it has training schedules, and info on dieting etc. i actually didn't train that well this time; i have no idea why.
bossman, is this your first NY Marathon? The route diabase posted looks daunting. puddles is training for one too, right?
You guys are much healthier than me. I only exercise by chasing my toddler around. And sex, that's my other workout routine.

i will be at the NYC marathon covering it for a running magazine
that you may or may not know of...
may have to throw in some urban/arch references
easy liberty, there are undergrads reading this.... once they find out people with kids have sex they will get all freaked out.
hahahaha little do they know how much better it gets, Cameron. Age rocks.

maybe next tuesday...i'm going to bed early tonight.
by the way, are you going to beat my 3 hrs 34 min 25 sec this sunday? i hope so since i was running like shit.
My race went terribly, terribly wrong... it was humiliating!

hobbite, what was the length of your race?
yeah right, puddles.
i thought hobbite was doing a marathon too...in which case, 2 hr 37 min is pretty damn good
bossman, correct me if i'm wrong, but didn't you do the chicago marathon in something like 3 and 1/2 hours?
4:30
...so i was off by an hour
Well actually, it was a half marathon. I need some physio...
...so i was off by 13.1 miles (21 kilometers)
apparently i'm not doing a very good job of listening
your hearing's still in tact, puddles. Turns out I didn't explicitly state the category I was going to race in.
You know what they say about assumptions, though -
"It makes an 'ass' out of 'u' and 'me'" - David Brent from 'The Office' -
Speaking of which, I think I'll go and watch some reruns!
to all you marathon runners out there.

GOOD LUCK to all the runners tomorrow!!!
and guess who i saw in my hotel lobby as i was leaving new york this morning...
the riddler suit man!
i saw him in denver once
is it safe???
I dreamed, I was winning the NYC Marathon....but damn some Brazilian just floated past me in the last quarter mile.....just my luck....shouldn't have eatten the moon-pie before going to bed.
1. M. Gomes dos Santos (BRA) 2:09:58
2. Stephen Kiogora (KEN) 2:10:06
3. Paul Tergat (KEN) 2:10:10
These dudes ran the whole thing at a constant speed of 12-13 mph 95 minute miles), incredible.
it takes me 2:09:58 to get dressed in the morning!!!
bossman, is that you out there prancing down the street without your shirt on?
yeah thats definitely me.
so, which one of you is in this year? i'm actually doing chicago this time, a far easier race. this might be my best marathon yet, as long as my sister can keep up. i just did my peak 20 mile run yesterday.
