i was in des moines overthe weekend and took a look at the library - unfortunately it was closed over the holiday weekend. anyhow, the exterior of the building looks a little rough. first it seems like some of the glass panel connections have failed - it is my guess the aluminum brackets with drywall screws are only temporary. also, the laminated screen between the glass has delaminated and there are weird streaks in the glass. overall the building didn't really do it for me and when details like i described have failed i really became critical of it. just my thoughts.

now that Chipperfield has won the Stirling Prize, is the Des Moines Library worth visiting to see if the minimalist exterior really is shoddy?
