I wonder how well off we'd all be if the other major issues facing us right now were given the attention that the fear of terrorism generates for this 'danger'...
the story that's coming out now is sort of pathetic: disgruntled doctor in a failed suicide attempt to spite his ex-wife and make sure she didn't get the $5m house?!
;)..
if you guys want to call me names, you have to go to the end of the line and wait for your turn.
due to open season, there are a lot of people waiting out there to stutter with moi.
good thing tina saved all the good episodes of american idol. i am off to some positive viewing now.
god (allah), what a swamp thing archinect can be...
Why a terrrorist should bomb a 4 story building in the UES?
Really, have you thought for even a second that it could have been a terrorist attack? seriously?!?
"The station initially considered scissoring the scenes showing Piglet, but abandoned the idea because the small pink-skinned character, one of Winnie the Pooh's closest friends, appeared too often, Cumhuriyet and the mass-circulation Sabah newspaper said."
it's nice to know that they were concerned that removing piglet could damage the storyline.
sorta like sponge-bob square pants getting the shakedown for acting too gay...
actually, i can remember my grandmother in all seriousness warning me not to watch the smurfs because they were magical creatures and only satan could be responsible for such things...yup, my gramma was a fat round version of the church lady (of SNL fame). the devil was everywhere we looked and we had to be vigilant.
, indeed a terrorist. Jefferson was half right to feel it out...
According to a 2005 appellate court opinion, the doctor had "intentionally traumatized" his Jewish wife, who was born in Nazi-occupied Holland, by posting "swastika-adorned articles and notes" around their home. The opinion also said Bartha had "ignored her need for support and assistance while she was undergoing surgery and treatment for breast cancer."
Cordula Bartha was granted the divorce "on grounds of cruel and inhuman treatment," according to the opinion, which also says her husband "systematically cut off her access to marital funds and credit as a means of psychological abuse."
I find it amusing that until Jefferson posted this thread the thought of terrorism being the cause of that building explosion never even entered my mind. In Philly it seems like buildings regularly just drop to the ground, usually managing to not pull down the rowhouses next to them, thank goodness.
Maybe if I lived in NYC I'd think differently. In all honesty the thought of another terrorist attack in the US just never occurs to me. It's not that I feel "safe", I just think of terrorism being a vastly more remote possibility than something like a car wreck, house fire, bankruptcy, breast cancer, husband chopping off his hand at work, my child drowning at swimming lessons, etc. I have more than enough to worry about as it is. And crazy neighbors are everywhere, you can't control that through zoning!
Jefferson is that the type of conversation/comment you were trying to spark by starting this thread? If not, why bother?
If you're going blow up your house to commit suicide and screw over your ex-spouse, make sure you do it properly. Calling for help via cellphone from beneath the rubble is just embarassing. Seriously, have a back up plan.
"I find it amusing that until Jefferson posted this thread the thought of terrorism being the cause of that building explosion never even entered my mind."
and the whole 'blackout weaves its way throught the city'
what the hell is that?
as far as terrorism...yes the first thing i thought of was
that terrorists were attacking a private residence on the
upper east side. first thing. bombing the home of a
single individual rather than trying to take on one of the
thousand or more buildings in new york city that actually
have large numbers of people in them and have some
sort of civic importance.
why go after a subway when
you take people out where they live one at a time?
it's no burying your head in the sand..it's common sense
and i hope you're not serious with this bs.
as far as preventing bombs in subways...it probably would
be too easy in nyc. but they have one of the largest systems
in the world...there are random bag searches and an increased
police prescence in alot of subway stations..that and a hyper
sensitivity to anything out of the ordinary by normal people.
so to answer your question. nyc is doing a lot..probably could
do more, but funding just got take away by the feds to spread
out throughout the u.s. so they have to cutback. i think what
they're focusing on is preventing people from purchasing materials
and uncovering terrorist plots.
What exactly do I need to take my head out of the sand about?
What do you hope to achieve by posting this thread?
How does your expansive and generous use of the thirteen words Explosion in NYC, Not terrorism this time, but when will be the next? help explain your viewpoint or more importantly lead to any kind of meaningful discussion on what is actually a discussion forum?
Orhan's comment that you go watch American Idle suggested - with subtlety that is no doubt lost on you - that your thread is sensational and shallow. Your comments back to him were both homophobic and racist, in my opinion.
Is there something to discuss here? Do you have fears, desires, insights, ruminations regarding the explosion in NYC and how it might relate to terrorism? Would it make you feel better to discuss these ideas with fellow architects? If so please share and please, try to use complete sentences.
And heresyoursign I totally agree - calling from your cell phone to be rescuesd amidst the wreckage you brought on yourself? Lame.

what is the NYC aouthorities doing to prevent something like that in NYC? Way too easy to pull off.....

i assumed the building failed because of a lingering Y2K bug in its hvac control systems...but what do i know.
