SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Students, civil servants and some workers in Shanghai are being given five days off next week when the city closes down for a North Asian security summit, state media said on Friday.
Travel agents in the city, China's richest and most cosmopolitan, have reported a boom in bookings as people rush to escape snarled traffic and stringent security measures for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation meeting.
Tours to Hong Kong and Macau had sold out, the China Daily quoted one travel agency as saying.
"The summit has given me a wonderful gift," the newspaper quoted civil servant Zhu Jiang as saying.
"I can predict the city of Hangzhou will be swarming with Shanghainese," said another Shanghai resident, referring to a nearby tourist city famed for its scenic lake.
Heads of state from China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan will gather in Shanghai, alongside the presidents of
Iran,
Afghanistan, Mongolia and Pakistan. They are expected to talk oil, terrorism and border controls.
It is the first time since the group was founded in 2001 that the summit has been held in Shanghai and police are taking no chances -- even though the lockdown will disrupt the operations of banks and financial service firms in the area.
Police have also asked people to refrain from hanging their washing out of windows to dry, as Shanghai tries to promote itself as a modern, global metropolis
