>a band of bees - free the bees
>belle and sebastian - the life pursuit
of course when either the nes sufjan stevens comes out in july or the new shins album (???) those of course will rule 2006. and if we are saying bands we have discovered this year but maybe not have released something that award, for me, goes to
There are a couple of pretty kickass song's on Cave In's new one (Perfect Pitch Black) although that is Dec 2005. I was also plesantly suprised by the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I didn't like it at first, but it grew on my really quickly.
the most minimalistic pop record of all time? Similar to the piano pieces of David Grubbs/Gastr del Sol, but even more bare. See the excellent label Kning Disk. Other favourites: N Collective, especially the excellent free-rock of MoHa!
pretty girls make graves - elan vitale
loose fur - born again in the usa
stereolab - fab four suture
i was very excited about the new paul simon/brian eno collaboration that came out last week, but it's not as interesting as i hoped. good, but not likely to hit constant rotation. too bad, 'cause i was stalking that one, waiting for it to come out.
Gnarls Barkley is everywhere. It's just hype. Granted Goodie Mobb was one of my favorite Hip Hop groups and C-lo is an amazing performer, I just get tired of hearing Crazy EVERYWHERE! ! ! ! ! !!
The new Jesu cd is amazing... and Between the Buried and Me is putting out a cover album for you Metal | Hardcore kids
I think the new Liars album is healthy departure for them, as well as Hot Chip's new disk.
film school is my favorite of this year so far.
they're also amazing live.
i'm really looking forward to the upcoming explosions in the sky album
the national was the best from late last year and is on constant rotation at my apartment... i'm really excited to see them perform this weekend.
ummm, who else am i always listening to....
but yeah like i guess this about albums released in 2006 so i guess i have to second the belle and sebastian and yeah yeah yeah albums...
band of horses - everything all the time
scott walker - the drift
growing - color wheel
circle - arkades / earthworm ep
built to spill - you in reverse
talkdemonic - beat romantic
yes, mightylittle, i do dig the ween live, and the greek is hands down the best outdoor venue i've been to - ween, they're troopers, and will play 3 hour sets if they're allowed - the lips, however, have lost their appeal, in my opinon - they really need to get back to the old, good stuff (circa hit the death to the future head) , and light things on fire on stage, like they used to, instead of putting a bunch of people in animal costumes with insane amounts of smoke machines on stage while throwing inflated ball toys to the masses - man, the last 3 times i've seen them they haven't changed a thing .. maybe if they team up with ween it'll be worth it.
anyways, to end the rant, here's what i'm diggin:
the duke spirit (hands down the best so far this year)
beirut
sunset rubdown
new walkmen album
bands who i love but whose new alubms are less than impressive:
stereolab,
loose fur
grandaddy
flaming lips (uggh!)
still haven't decided on:
cat power
yeah yeah yeah's
raconteurs (sound like some potential, but nothing original - is the new hot thing to try to sound like Zepplin or black Sabbath? i'll take zepplin over racounteurs, the nine black alps, wolfmother, ect)
danielson
the secret machines
the liars
the starlight mints
the secret machines
futureboy, if you like film school (did they play american turnip off of "brilliant career"- that hands down is their best song) and explosions, you should check out tarentel (from bones to satellite), and mono (One more step and you Die)
thanks knock,
this makes me look forward to the temporary residence showcase at bowery ballroom even more....it'll be even more awesome since a friend of a friend is supposed to do sound for it.
just make sure you wear some high quality earplugs, futureboy... going to see mono with pelican and tarentel at the end of this month in SF ... yes, you should check out pelican too, and kinski if you're unfamiliar.
Listen. If you NEED great songs and some super new and just old great bands, I’ve compiled this list just for you. I think you’re ready for some of this action. First, how did I find these bands? You’re wondering? Simple. My uncle showed up in his brown van last summer. It’s got one of those plastic bubble windows and an old Western scene painted on the side. The inside has this carpet he installed himself and a small fridge with tons of Coors. And then there’re all these drink holders and dirty mags spread all around. Other than that, it’s all records. And fast food wrappers. Loads of ‘em. Loads of records, I mean, not fast food wrappers. But there’re loads of those too. And dirty mags.
I spent a month just digging through all those records while my uncle went on this huge bender. He’d go out drinking during the day and leave his van parked in front of my place. He left me the keys in case he called me drunk from some payphone and needed a ride. I don’t have my own car or anything.
Anyway, while he was out getting smashed, I’d be in that brown van sorting through all these crazy records of his. He had this record player mounted on the floor in there. It would get so damn hot in that van that I’d have to leave the big slider door open. People would walk by and see me in there with a Coors and all these dirty mags and this crazy music blaring and they’d just get real nervous looking and sort of speed up a little. If they had kids with them, they’d pull those kids in close and steer them away from the van. Who could blame them? I must have looked like a real pervy creep in there.
But man oh man were there some great records. I’m gonna give you the list now. Here goes:
-Palson Krune: The Interior (Album)
-Trait of Lipton: Covered your Cob (Album)
-The Porch Lights: What will it be? (Song)
-House and Crane: Demo (Song ((Demo)) )
-Fell off the Swing: Hurt My Knee (Album)
-Madison Fort: Heart Candle (Bonus Track)
Just try these out for starters. You’ll be coming back for more.
Ghostface Killah

Wolfmother
Wolf Parade
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Arctic Monkeys
Raconteurs
recent Ritchie Hawtin
