im heading to southern cali for a few weeks later this month. it'll be my first time out there and im looking for things to add to my itinerary. impressive firms..nice beaches .. from san deigo to la maybe to sf,
-lots of ground to cover
and yes, i heard about in&out and the tacos
go look up the "good food in LA" thread. lots of stuff there that us angelenos posted. you should just stay until early june for the convention.
just to rattle off a few things:
wayfarer's chapel, palos verdes
wright- ennis-brown and hollyhock house
neutra - lovell house
eames home - pacific palisades
watts towers
moneo cathedral
morphosis CalTrans
gehry's home in santa monica and disney hall..
venice canals / walkstreets
venice beach (the freaks come out at night)
palos verdes - shipwreck hike. very fun
beverly hills just for the pure extravagance and the taschen book store
lautner's chemosphere
getty villa - the new addition is by machado & silvetti and very good. call just after 10 am to get forfeitted tickets for that day. the villa itself sorta sucks.
getty center by meier... great views, mediocre campus/buildings mediocre/poor art.
griffith park and griffith park observatory to see the skyline at night
the standard downtown for drinks and being seen.
and drive the 110 from pasadena to downtown. it's a great drive.
malibu has some nice beaches... everything though from torrance to santa monica is pretty much exactly the same.
SCIArc (tho if classses are over might be a bit empty)
Bradbury Building & Broadway downton in general (must see interior)
Portman's Bonaventure Hotel downtown
OMA's Prada in Beverly Hills
morphosis new Science Center School near USC,
and Diamond Ranch High School near Pomona
Wright's Sturges House near Pacific Palisades
Irving Gill's Horatio West Court off Main in S.Monica near Gehry's Edgemar
Materials & Applications installation site in Silverlake
Moss' stuff in Culver City (lots of it - Stealth, Box, Samitaur, Beehive, Umbrella, Slice...)
Lautner's Goldstein Sheats House (if you can get in -- way better than Chemoshpere or just about anything else in LA)
and if going to S.Diego: the Salk and Neurisciences Institutes in La Jolla of course, but definitely see Schindler's Lovell Beach House along the way in Newport Beach...
yeah renting a car, arriving in la, staying for a few days, driving down to san diego, slowly making our way back to la, and then heading to san fran for a few
If you're going to SF you have to see the de Young Museum by Herzog and de Meuron. You can go up to the top of the tower for free and it is an amazing view.
if you go between LA and San Diego, stop in San Juan Capistrano off the 5 for lunch at El Campeon on Camino Capistrano- its an authentic mexican food counter restaurant that is absolutely incredible.
