CD Swap!

1161

ooh. i had a nasty rough edge at the end of one song. i swear i think the producers did it on purpose so it would be harder to lift the song for mixes like this. i don't have any way to fade out or anything and the song was worth it so ... it just sounds a little messy.

Messy transitions are the hallmark of my work, Steven, just like inconsistency is the hallmark of my parenting style. Sigh.

I don't know what it is but I can't always get my cds to play on my car cd player. I'm using Sony or Maxell CD-R's using itunes for burning, and they just don't always work. I put my cd for FOGlite in my car and 3 out of 4 times it won't play, but then the 4th time it will, and it plays fine in my stereo at home or of course in my computer. Any ideas anyone?? Very frustrating.

yeah, i dont have any mixing stuff on my computer either... so some levels are off, but the tone of this mix is whats important... see, i was once told that in order to make a good mix, you have to start off strong... but not too strong, then take it up a notch, but then you gotta bring it down a notch, you dont wanna blow your wad too soon

should i worry that liznieve doesn't seem to have been back since 12 april, email on file doesn't work, and she(he?) hasn't emailed me for my address?

Oooh postneorealcrapismist I am excited.

Randar82, yours is taking a little time because my computer bit the dust, along with my music collection, which is taking me a while to re-upload from CDs. It was vast. Blast.

FOG Lite

Thanks Liberty! Just came upstairs to pop it in the computer to play, seems to be going fine. You can post the playlist now.

It's a great mix, did you somehow pick up on my recent banjo binge? Camper Van Beethoven was an old favorite but I never really made the transition to Cracker. (And Ike Reilly kicks ass!)

Glad to hear it FOGLite. If I'd known I would have included more Marah with banjos - they do a vernacular Mummer banjo that every Archinecter in Philly should listen to...Song list plus a few notes:

Favorite Songs of the Moment Spring 2006

1.Hip Hop Thighs #17 – Ike Reilly (Salesmen and Racists) – You'll hear a lot of Ike on this CD as he is a constant favorite. This is his first release. Sorta white-boy rap, I guess, but he's also often compared to Dylan and Westerberg as he's quite the poet. I love Ike.
2.My Sweet Annette – Drive By Truckers (Decoration Day)
3.Eurotrash Girl – Cracker (Oh Cracker Where Art Thou?) – Cracker joins Leftover Salmon for a bluegrass album.
4.Hangover Days – Jason Collett (Idols of Exile)
5.Kiss Catastrophe – The Damnwells (Bastards of the Beat)
6.Birthday – The Sugarcubes (Life's Too Good) – I've never followed Bjork, but this song has always hit me hard.
7.Wondering Where the Lions Are – Bruce Cockburn (Live at World Cafe, Vol. 6)
8. Strange & Beautiful (I'll Put a Spell on You) - Aqualung (Strange & Beautiful)
9.Overkill (Acoustic Version) – Colin Hay (Man at Work)
10. Eyepennies – Sparklehorse (It's A Wonderful Life) – Featuring PJ Harvey's vocals.
11. Electric Harmony – The Damnwells (Bastards of the Beat)
12. My Heart is the Bums on the Street – Marah (Kids in Philly) – Marah is a Philly band I fell in love with when I lived there. They are so vernacular, their music is influenced by the Mummers, who/which is a phenomenon you'll have to look up, they do a big New Year's Parade in Philly every year . An unbelievable spectacle – try Google Image.
13. The Mixture – Ike Reilly Assassination (Sparkle in the Finish) – For Ike's second release, after Universal dropped him, he added the band name to represent himself as less of a singer/songwriter more of a rock band.
14. Get Off This – Cracker (Oh Cracker Where Art Thou?)
15. I Will Let You Down – Ike Reilly Assassination (Junkie Faithful) – From the third release, an anthem to failure. Sadly my 3-year-old son Angus knows almost all of the lyrics to this song!
16. Here Comes Your Man – Pixies (Doolittle) - An old song, but the Doolittle release is damn near perfect, every song still amazing.
17. Round Eye Blues - Marah (Kids in Philly)
18. Wallace – Drive By Truckers (Southern Rock Opera Act 1)
19. Ex-Americans – Ike Reilly Assassination (Sparkle in the Finish) - A good closer, melancholy remembrance of Euro travels.

Yay for the CDSwap!!!!!!!

Liberty, awesome mix! I love Marah, and the Mummers definatly have to be seen to be believed or even understood. Ike Reilly rocks too, and you can't go wrong with the Pixies. This is exciting!

and to the people who are interested in the next one, im thinking we will probably be doing them around once a month or so, so check back soon (deinatly after the 15th of may)

hey got my mix from Steven Ward on Friday, but left it on the kitchen counter when I left for the weekend, then it's been week from hell at work so I STILL haven't heard it all the way through. Like what I've heard so far, and the presentation is exactly what you would expect from his online persona here, spot on. I'm gonna burn a copy to send with my mix to AP when I send it, just to spread the joy...

I'm behind, I have a tentative play list assembled, will try to get it burned and in the mail this week. I'm worried, nobody likes what I listen to. lletdown, if you hate it you can re-gift if you like. :)

What is the deadline anyways? The 15th?

May 2, 06 2:22 pm  ·

i think what fro might mean is that the mix he received from me was somewhat kentucky-centric. only somewhat...

i like spreading the joy. liberty bell and i will be seeing each other this weekend and will be swapping too. if i get a chance i might get to burn some for the other people i'll see this weekend. fingers crossed and blank cds allowing.

ap - that was so bad it made me smile.

Pay it FRO-ward was indeed hilariously clever.

I'm burning a copy of mine for Steven but I'm going to try this: insert cd that won't play in my car into husband's Powerbook, rip songs to his itunes, burn onto new CD - because I want to make a CD that will play in a car, especially since I know Steven will want to hear it on his drive away from Cincy on Sunday!

This is so fun. Thanks quixotica.

A few people seem interested in mixing, so here are some links:

audacity is a freeware audioeditor, capable of everything you need for a basic mix cd, including tempo and pitch adjustments. only downside is it doesn't have integrated cd burning, so to preserve proper transitons and timing, export one cd-length file and chop it up with cd wave

you can then burn the files with your cd burning program, just make sure that it's set up to not insert any unwanted gaps between tracks (DAO rather than TAO; disc at once rather than track at once)

As in one of my past lives I was an audio engineer geek, I use wavelab, which has a powerful audio montage feature capable of cd burning and some other nifty features like [shifty eys] hidden tracks[/shifty eyes]

Which is Why Steven Ward is probably getting a CD from me.

alright, minor correction here. i received an email and address from someone who i ASSUMED was dusty.

it must be 3d though, because when he saw my post about having heard from dusty, he wrote me again saying alright, send it to dusty.

i know i'm easily confused, but i think i've got it straight now. correct me if i'm wrong, but dusty is still missing in action, and i've now got 3dgraffitti snail mail.

all is well.

please return to your normally scheduled programming.

Well I'm trying to make a copy of my CD for FOGlite to give to Steven tomorrow and my itunes (for Windows) has completely crapped out. Won't burn a CD, says "burn complete" but the CD is actually still blank. I give up! I have work to do today!!

(Steven if I can get it figured out I hope to still rbing you a copy but I could easily waste my entire workday dealing with this ugh!)

May 5, 06 10:31 am  ·

no prob.

i have a bunch of my cd collection ripped into wma. it came with my computer and it's easy. saves my playlists so i can title them and come back to them.

i've shied away from itunes, not because i'm afraid it'll be difficult but because i'm sure i'll spend too much time playing with it.

i have 3 copies to bring on sun.
