Finally saw the EOM wrapper up close from the Bike Path. Super weird, excessive and probably not needed for these times of extreme inequality and social duress. But made a tiny bit of visual sense with all the concrete on the creek.

Interesting building. To be fair though, there has always been extreme inequality and social duress throughout the past 300 years.

Did UL get rid of their printed Fire Resistance directories and I just not know about it? I've been using the online version, I'm not a fan, and previously it was support staff that was responsible for ordering our code and reference materials. How and where do you get yours?

I have an older refence book. I find the assembly I want in the book and then I look it up on the website for the updated information and current CAN/ULC.

B3ta, yes. As far as I know, the printed doc went bye bye several years ago when they revamped their website. It's a pain to learn the search functions but it has everything there and it is updated constantly.  You can also do reverse searches by using a specific product to find applicable assemblies.

Ahip, many of the assemblies in the old printed ULC docs have changed numbers or don't exist anymore.  We've also ran into issues where one assembly in the book was good, but the testing expired so they pulled the material from their website.  Office policy now is to only use assembly sheets directly from ULC website but that's too much work for some which only adds work for me when I need to dig out my cape and save the day.

I spent yesterday designing a screen porch addition to my house in Sketch Up. I have at least 25 things that I should have prioritized over dicking around in SU for 6 hours, but I just couldn't help myself.

Is this COVID brain? Perimenopause? ADHD? Depression? I can't seem to do the things I really *should* be doing, but I can easily lose myself in what I *want* to be doing.

Anyway, thank goodness for the rain this morning. These heat domes suck and definitely contribute to my mood.

We have more fireflies this year than any of the previous 10 years here. Maybe because the spring wasn't a drought or flood for a change, and/or because instead of mowing our cleared 2+ acres, I mowed pathways and let the grass and wildflowers grow.

Fire inspector tells owner they need to spray fire proof steel, and their 1953 school building needs to meet 2018 building code. When I ask under what authority does the schools corridor walls need to meet the current codes, when the doors and casework through said corridor walls don’t meet current codes, I am told that they won’t be bullied. I’m just asking questions so I can explain why the school needs to allocate 2 million dollars to the school board for future repairs, and why my other clients in the same state need to plan for future contingencies that they were not also aware needed to be met.

I wonder if it would be beneficial to add a note to the create-a-login process that this isn't a place to crowdsource project design for free. There seems to be an expectation that genpop just needs to reach into the online architectural collective to get the best ideas/advice.

I'd also suggest that it's not the end of the world to actually comment on someone's project. I don't think it's a liability thing in any way, shape or form.

Perhaps the less acerbic way to respond would be to say that the poster is asking a far larger question that anyone is able to properly respond to online & suggest they go see a local professional. And that by preempting a design pro's work with a half-baked starter plan is likely to tie the pro's hands more than make the project easier.

I think the people that come here for free crowdsourced design are either clueless about what it takes to do what they're asking or they are aware and are despicable people. Either way, telling them the infeasibility / error in what they're asking is not going to produce positive results. Either they won't understand and think we're being 'mean' or they think we owe them something and we're being 'mean'.

Jul 16, 24 1:57 pm  ·

Not really. If the person you're speaking with knows you're an architect and you know that they know you can be held liable for any 'instruments of service' that you provide them. This can be bar napkin sketches in certain situations. I know this because a firm I used to work with was held liable for a sketch on of our architects did on a napkin during a church picnic.

Jul 19, 24 8:49 am  ·

Bench - pretty much.

I'll look at maps and hike into a few new areas to try and find signs that indicate elk could be there in September. I have to still be aware of where I walk, my scent, the wind direction, not being seen, and not making too much noise though. It's basically hunting but without my bow.

Elk are big animals that move a lot.  If I spook them during my scouting they will be 'scared' off the area for several months.

Jul 19, 24 9:27 am  ·

In the meantime, I saw 4* bull elk hanging out on someone's lawn while riding my bicycle on Saturday.

*I'm pretty sure it was 4, but I didn't stop to look more closely and unfortunately my GoPro footage only shows some of them as just brown colored spots with how wide the shot was and how far away they were.

I think 3 of them are shown here, the one with the arrow pointing to it was standing up, I think there are 2 more laying down just slightly to the foreground of the one standing, but they sort of blend in with the tips of the taller grasses in the foreground.

Why do i see so many home ev chargers installed outside? My expectation is that it’d be more secure & protected in a garage…I feel like I see them everywhere. Maybe it’s Portland? Or, am I just noticing them because they are outside?

What are your clients choosing: indoor or outdoor install?

Jul 29, 24 11:12 am  ·
 ·
Non Sequitur

What if you don't have a garage? I don't and neither do most of the other houses in my 1960s hood... But it's an interesting question anyways. I have 2 10mil houses finishing construction and both have their EV charges on outside walls by choice even though their garages can park an armada of vehicles.

Jul 29, 24 11:18 am  ·
1  ·
axonapoplectic

I’m guessing the preference is outdoors due to required clearances around the charger and the fact that different vehicles have different locations for charging ports. Indoors you’re sort of stuck installing it midway on a side wall if you want flexibility.

I know a guy who had some sort of EV (not sure they ever found out which one, or if it was one of the "toys" or a car) catch on fire and burn down his whole garage including some sort of custom ferrari. So that's a vote for putting it outside I guess.

Last housing crash housing prices really didn’t drop in a bunch of metros. Some places prices stayed flat and some places prices went up. If the housing market crashes i think it’s mostly going to be Arizona, Texas, and Florida.

archanon, I can tell by your comment that you clearly have no clue about how the economy works. Maybe you also wish to lose your job when the economy tanks? I didn't think so.

it is a sentiment not unheard of in economic media.

The economy as it is set up right now benefits the incumbent more than anyone else, to an astonishing degree. Meaning the only way for young people to make headway is for the whole thing to fall down enough to create the possibility of home ownership or to buy stock, or whatever. Right now, the only ones who benefit from high stock prices are those who are earning rent from it.

On the other hand, much of the world seems to have avoided building enough housing for the population that wants it, so its hard to say that an imploding economy will change much on that front. Even if it wouldnt, the feeling that something has to give is probably one of the biggest motivators in politics in the last few years. It explains a lot of the extreme views on all sides.

I have an older RadWagon (purchased at the end of 2019) that I use to cart the kids around town. It has been a solid bike with very little maintenance or issues. I think we have like 800 miles on it. At the time, it was one of the more affordable electric cargo bikes on the market. Overall, it has been a great bike.

Rad Power Bikes are the most well known because of their marketing and cheaper price tag, but it comes at the cost of some quality in my experience (my wife has a Rad City). Brakes could be better, quality control could be better, motor can be better, etc.

I'd recommend looking into offerings from Tern if you can. I've seen really good things about them and their Bosch motors are probably the best in the industry. I don't have a Tern myself, but if I were to get an e-bike of this style for commuting, I would probably go with one of theirs ... likely the GSD (i.e. Get Shit Done). (I do have a box bike style e-bike with a Bosch motor system ... Urban Arrow Family)

All that being said, if you do end up going with Rad Power Bike, look very seriously at upgrading the mechanical disc brakes to hydraulic disc brakes. I do think they have a few options for bikes with hydraulic disc brakes from the factory now too, or you might find a bike shop that can upgrade them for you (though I have heard some shops won't even let Rad Power Bikes in the door due to insurance and liability issues).

Aug 9, 24 12:18 pm  ·

To add onto the insurance / liability part. In my area, if a bike shop doesn't sell an particular brand of e-bike they will not work on it. This is because of insurance and liability.

Don’t get rad power unless they have a local shop that can service it. That was my first ebike. I put over 4K miles on it. The torque washer broke and the rear hub totally stripped out the dropouts.

Currently riding an aventon because there are about 5 local shops that service it. Pretty solid bike - a lot easier to change out the brake pads than the rad bike. Currently have about 3k miles on it and have been riding it for a little over a year. FYI, Brake pads last around 500-1000 miles depending on how much stop and go you do.

I need to vent a little against an AHJ pulling new rules out of their asses every time we submit for a permit - not published, not communicated to anyone - they just wait for the submittal to ask for stuff that could have been done in advance but nobody knew.

I hear ya. My largest local city has by far the most complicated permitting process around, but I have learned that if something isn't clear in their zoning ordinance, I need to contact that department because they almost always have a supplemental document explaining those specific details. Why they don't just add them to the ordinance I don't understand.

you're lucky they have a document, this is all coming only from their thoughts and never put into paper. A) coach them and provide support and encouragement

Yeah, B is toxic but it can't be all "A".

Sometimes you need to be told "get it done/ figure it out" as a young architect you discover that 1. you are more resourceful than you thought and 2. you will always have to train and motivate yourself in this profession, in some way.

The gentle hands-on coaching is good too, but too much of that is a bad thing. As long as you don't do it in a toxic way (like the above example) I think it is not only fine, but important. Maybe this is path "C".

I always got "They didn't teach you anything in school, did they?" And as they walked away, annoyed, I would respond, "I learned a lot in school but not this. They said I would have to learn a lot on the job." But they were gone by then and I struggled till I figured it out, working long hours and weekends to get it right. And we wonder why the profession is dying.

Sep 2, 24 9:39 am  ·

archanonymous - I don't entirely disagree, but there are right and wrong ways to say something. "I think this is something you can probably work out on your own; do the best you can and then we'll review it together" will have a much different effect than "figure it out, kid, I'm busy."

Sep 2, 24 10:13 pm  ·
2  ·

we have come to understand that a part of job with training is to explain enough to start and to iterate until its what we need. It takes more time than a pro would need, but we are moving forward and that is the point. We build the extra time into our planning if a young intern is working with us. Not a problem.

It took us some time to learn this process. When I was working for others it was about the same, with lots of friendly cajoling for being doing bad work. It was never toxic and I have to say my first office was amazing at teaching. That was in Japan though, where graduates are not expected to know anything at all. I didnt know how lucky I was at the time.

Backpacked in five miles.  I didn't see any elk but saw a lot of sign (scat, scrapes, eaten plants).  I was in heavy brush and called in two elk but they never got close enough for me to see.

I did get a grouse so the trip was productive!   I also had a very unhappy squirrel throw acorns at me.  Little bastard could throw hard.  :s

I count at least 19 employees featured on their website ... who wants to make a report to the California Labor Commissioner's Office?

"As of January 1, 2023, an employer with 15 or more employees must include the pay scale for a position in any job posting. If an employer with 15 or more employees engages a third party to announce, post, publish, or otherwise make known a job posting it must provide the pay scale to the third party and the third party must include it within the job posting. The Labor Commissioner interprets this to mean that the pay scale must be included within the job posting if the position may ever be filled in California, either in-person or remotely."

I think Archinect should inform them and if TW doesn't change their post it should be removed.

Sep 12, 24 11:52 am  ·
 ·

No, that's not Archinect's job.

TWA has a responsibility to comply with the law. If they don't the recourse is for someone aggrieved by the violation to make a report to the Labor Commissioner's office. Archinect has no standing.

"35. Where and when can a person file a claim if they were aggrieved by a violation of Labor Code Section 432.3? The person may file a complaint with the Labor Commissioner’s Office, the state agency charged with enforcement. A written complaint must be filed within one year after the date the person learned of the violation. A person may also bring a civil action for injunctive relief and any other relief that the court deems appropriate."

Here are the first 2 paragraphs of my blog post I linked above as a refresher:

I'm seeing complaints coming up in the forums as jurisdictions are implementing salary transparency laws and companies posting jobs on Archinect are allegedly not immediately following legal requirements to disclose salary ranges on those postings. These complaints seem to focus on Archinect not doing enough to enforce these laws on the job posts they publish. I get it, Archinect could hold a lot of power here to refuse to post jobs where the posting is not written to comply with these laws, but it's not their responsibility or their job.

I think the target of the complaint is misplaced when we focus on Archinect and not the company who is actually required to comply with the law (don't shoot the messenger etc.). I'm not trying to say Archinect can't do more, but I'm saying if you want to make an effort to fix these posts, you should first be going to the companies, and/or the authorities that enforce these laws.

Sep 12, 24 11:54 am  ·
3  ·

Of course, anyone can email the address included in the job posting to remind TWA of their responsibility to follow the law as well.

In my experience when I get head hunted and they don't include the salary range, I've been able to direct them to the state agency's website and inform them of the law and they come back with the range. YMMV

Sep 12, 24 12:02 pm  ·
 ·
gwharton

Yes. EA is right. It's not the platform's responsibility to make sure that postings conform with local laws and regulations. That's on whoever is making the postings. If TWA is breaking the rules, then that's between TWA and whomever is responsible for enforcing those rules in TWA's jurisdiction.

EA - I'm not saying it's Archinect's legal responsibility to have job posts include required salary ranges. I'm saying Archinect should 'put their money where their mouth is' and remove job postings that are identified as not doing so.

Archinect put their money in the bank when they got paid to post the job. That's all they need to do with their money.

Archinect's mouth, if I recall correctly, is in the camp of they alert the poster of the potential that their posting might not be fulfilling the laws when they can, and they've contemplated making all postings have salary range (but have obviously not implemented a policy for that).

That's too bad.

I understand it's not Archinect's responsibility however I'd think if they actually supported the salary laws they would at least look into postings that people have reported for not following said law.

Who's offering to pay Archinect to look into those postings and provide legal counsel to the companies advertising jobs on their site? The advertisers certainly aren't.

I really don't know how many times (or ways) it can be said that it is not Archinect's responsibility to do any of that. The fact that they even point out to advertisers that they might be violating laws (as they stated in that post in Jan. '23) is above and beyond their standard of care.

Would you expect a newspaper's classified ad desk to research the laws surrounding everything anyone wanted to post there to verify it met any and all legal requirements that might apply? Does Craiglist do that? Facebook Marketplace? Do you think Indeed or other large job posting sites do? How much will you send me if I can find a potentially law violating post from an architecture firm on some other job site?

OddA... why the screen name change? Someone else got salty and sent word to the office again? Is it to hide from the elks?

Naw - felt bored so I changed it. Also I don't hike from the elk, I call out to them!

On a more pertinent note:  I contacted Tom Wiscombe's firm the day I posted this and politely informed them that that they needed to post the pay range.  They got back to me and said they would change all their job postings here.  Looks like they added it!

It was kind of ambiguous when I responded to Archinect job ad, via the insider reference as they are looking for somebody to do “fieldwork.”

Two hours later I was sitting across the guy with green hair on his big head. After some small talk about weather…
- So, what’s this.., umm, fieldwork about?

- Well, it is about busting some architects for false information on their job ads and we just signed a contract with the F..B..I to clean up the swamp!

 - Ok. No problem, I bust architects all the time and love to tell them “folks.., you’re busted!” when all of them working on some drawings on their computer screens in their office… Who you want me to bust first?

- We’re waiting for our accounting dept. to let us know who. Although we’d like to start with some minor-starchitect types.

- Okidoki. Btw, what’s the pay? I heard FBI is pretty generous when it comes to making the world a mo-better place you know what I mean?

- Do I know......! You can be sure it’ll get you a better crib.

Too late. I already took the position. Sorry bub. BTW - you really need to do a better job covering your internet history. No judgement however you may not want that getting out.

Established small offices are small for a reason. Not all want to be small on purpose.

After a long dry spell I now have 2+ years of backlog and am turning down work. Now I regret stressing so much and not enjoying the free time. Back to the grindstone.

That's the main reason why I don't ever want to be a managing partner. Finding work is just something I'm not good at.

Repeat work is the key. Getting work is easier for me than completing it through construction which I don't have to do for the new backlog. I suspect I'm unusual in that regard. I'm more interested in concept design and people than in construction.

Good for you, congrats on being busy again? Alas, the capitalist system necessitates us being busy or worried all the time. No middle ground.

I'm like you Wilma - I really enjoy conceptual design and working with people. I'm good with people and quite 'personable'. If I could just do conceptual and SD I'd love that.  In fact, that's what I did for the first eight years of my career.

Maybe I can do conceptual design only. Why not? That's what a lot of unlicensed designers do. Low risk, limited scope, what's not to love. I think knowing all the technical construction stuff makes for better concept design so would still need to keep sharp which might be a challenge.

I agree. If I could find a conceptual designer career I'd take it in a heartbeat.

I would absolutely go back to architecture full time if I could just do programming and schematics then hand off to someone else. That’s kind of what I do now, but not really.

I'm currently working part time doing only schematic design. That's the good part. The bad part is the type of firm who is willing to hire someone in that capacity.

Riding the wave for a while though. Going to get a sick new subwoofer for the van out of this at the very least.

archanonymous, care to elaborate?

The drawback I see is what position will I be in years later if all I've been doing is schematics. I'll be out of the loop.

archanonymous, I would also like to know more about what kind of firm would hire someone to do part time schematic work. Also, the subwoofer is for the van you live in down by the river, right?

Well the firm is really really horrible in terms of design, so my part-time design-only contributions are quite valuable to them. I imagine you aren't going to find a similar position anywhere that already does quality work.

Most small firms I've ever worked with/ interviewed with/ talked with are tightly controlled by the founder so there just isn't much room for this kind of schematic-only design. Most established corporate firms have very set ways to matriculate into design director roles, and even then, it is often the prinicpals bringing in work setting the design direction.

And yes, the subwoofer is for the van. The ducks and I are hatching a plan to light up the geese with GWAR at full volume one day.
