Ok, what's the deal with Crimea, and whys it a problem? If I listen to my red friends, it's proof of Obama's ineptitude in foreign policy and fraudulent presidency. Everyone else is talking in circles and only about what we're gonna do to Russia. But what is ACTUALLY happening, and why should we care at all?
Oh, sorry, didn't think red friends and Russia. I meant conservative Palin-loving red. Whoops.
Ok, so Crimea is part of Ukraine, and part of Ukraine wants to be Russian, and part wants to stay Ukraine, and so Russia moved in to 'free' its new pledglings effectively conquering Ukraine?
It matters to us because when Ukraine became a nation, several western governments (the US included) pledged support to help it maintain those borders. So, what are they going to do?
The US and EU wanted Ukraine to join the European Union for three reasons. To keep it out of the Russian Federation; to create another victim for capitalist austerity (like Greece, Italy, Spain, Ireland, etc.) and because Ukraine is critical to Russia for supplying gas to Europe. When the president of the Ukraine opted for the Russian Federation over the EU, everything went to shit. It is widely assumed that the west is actively supporting the unrest, just as the it is in Syria. Some of this may also be revenge for Putin's success in preventing direct US military action in Syria.
In the latest demonstration of utter hypocrisy, Secretary of State (and ketchup centimillionaire) John Kerry told Meet the Press’ David Gregory ”You just don’t in the 21st century behave in 19th century fashion by invading another country on completely trumped up pretext.”
I believe some ukrainians are pro-western while some are pro-russian. Ukraine used to be part of the soviet union, and a lot of russians would like to return to the position of power and security they had then. there is also a naval fleet in Ukraine that is kind of russian, so russia has a real military interest. They have trained killer dolphins. Bigger picture is, other former soviet states could follow whatever they do.
Life in the ukraine doesn't revolve around america. They have their own problems. Maybe you should tell your red state friends to learn how to take responsibility for themselves instead of always blamming someone else.
Tammuz can tell you about how this is all about america being evil, because nobody anywhere does anything unless america is somehow at the center.
I watched World War Z last night. LOVED IT!!!! And not only for my boyfriend Brad. I love pandemic movies, and science-nerd problem solving of pandemics. And I loved how quiet the ending was in comparison to two bombastic and exciting zombie battle scenes.
That said, I prefer when global catastrophes happen only in movies, not on the actual globe. I hope this Ukraine thing doesn't explode, which it seems it easily could. Gotta feed the military beast.
One of our students (3rd grade) wants to be an architect so we've been talking about it. This is so cute, he wants to try to design a house but is very concerned about "the HOA". We told him not to worry about that, but he is still very worried.

The government is the one funding auto-centric infrastructure - they're the one who created the interstate highway system - and are the ones currently funding sprawl - through both earmarks and other incentives.
the reason transit (and bicycling and walking) is so prevalent in other places - especially northern europe - is because their governments (back in the 60s and 70s) didn't have the money to create and maintain all this car infrastructure. This is a big reason why the Netherlands (and Denmark) got all that bike infrastructure - it's the cheapest way to deal with urban congestion.
There are a handful of US cities dealing with this now, and since federal money has been drying up for highway expansion - they're turning to cheaper options like BRT (bus rapid transit) and bike lanes.
More like Agnes Martin's work, though fishnet is an example of a distorted grid. The difference is I like grids that are irregular because they are made by hand, while fishnet stockings are a regular grid made irregular by an underlying form.
agnes martin's work is absolutely devastating in person. hard to describe other than it's like those moments of hyper awareness when your self disintegrates...
It is, toast. The world rushes away like wind past your ears and the only thing that exists is the surface of the canvas. But somehow it connects you - or connects me, at least - to all humanity across time, too. Pretty powerful for a grid.
last night i told my gf/future wife that donna was on t.v. and in the nytimes. why aren't you in the n.y.times and on t.v. she asked. because i am not donna sink. i replied.
No, they photograph horribly. Impossible to photograph. There's a monograph/catalogue from her exhibition that toured in 1993 or thereabouts - I saw it at Milwaukee art museum. SFMOMA has one, when I saw it installed it was near a Chuck Close which was a lovely juxtaposition.
curt - I think you're in the northeast... there's one at the MFA in Boston and I think she's in a few galleries in NYC - I saw an exhibition a couple years ago at the Pace of pencil drawings which was amazing. The one I really want to see is at the Saatchi in London - but the one person I knew in London moved back to NYC a couple years ago, so now I don't really have an excuse to go there anymore.
but yeah - definitely check out her work if you can.
i'm smack-dab in the middle of the midwest. i don't get to the northeast very often, or ever really, but i would like to see her work if i ever get the chance. i don't have much art in my house, but i what i do have is mondrian, and i have had the opportunity to see the originals of the prints i have. (as it is, i am currently unable to acquire originals). minimalist abstract expressionism seems to be in the same vein.

well done donna!
I did not get any sound.....but Missy you do have some Italian going there....with those hands working the room.
Nice looking installation.
Donna, you sound so ... professional.
Way cool. And fun too I'll bet.
very nice, donna. were you wearing some awesome boots? cuz you dwarfed your interviewer.
That's fantastic, Donna. You looked great! And that space/art is nice, too.
I worry a little about the longevity/ durability of that installation, though...
well, i guess every silver lining has to have a touch of grey
right click appears to be broken again
donna that's a mighty big ring.
if i had a ring like that, everyone would know my name too.
Anyone?
What is going on? I hope this isn't too basic, but it looks like they are on the verge of civil war, many eastern ukrainians want to be russian again.
What is a "red friend" anyway?
Ok, so Crimea is part of Ukraine, and part of Ukraine wants to be Russian, and part wants to stay Ukraine, and so Russia moved in to 'free' its new pledglings effectively conquering Ukraine?
He is there to (supposedly) protect Russians in the Ukraine.

I guess so.

Domestic issues don't matter in geopolotics, except to the extent that they can be (mis)represented to support one side or another.

The scene on the plane is unforgettable. NO EXIT.
If I were Putin, I wouldn't want to lose one of the best ports of the navy:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Sea_Fleet
I wouldn't want to give up the Resorts in the Black Sea...if I were Putin.
kiev however, that he can give up.
If I were Putin I wouldn't want to give up the revenue on all that gas flowing through the pipeline to Europe.
I think Putin is afraid of loosing all those beautiful Ukranina Models handing on his arms.

Ah, the benefits of austerity.
Economics can be a tool for good or evil, though it tends to run in one direction, like Ford buying and then closing streetcar companies.
Like fishnet stockings ...

I like the irregular grid of fish net stockings when they are worn by women who are not great grandmothers in mini skirts. I draw the line there.
So grandmothers in miniskirts and fishnets are OK? I'm sure there's a porn channel for that.
agnes martin's work is absolutely devastating in person. hard to describe other than it's like those moments of hyper awareness when your self disintegrates...
miles, rule #34 is understood and doesn't really need expressed....
Miles, Where I come from you can be a grandmother at 36... and I know alot of hot 36 year old women..
where does one go to see agnes martin's work? or do you suppose a print would be somewhat close enough to an original?
last night i told my gf/future wife that donna was on t.v. and in the nytimes. why aren't you in the n.y.times and on t.v. she asked. because i am not donna sink. i replied.
