Fancy Dashed Linetype - How to create in AutoCAD?

I like to read Detail magazine (http://tinyurl.com/88yqg) and I admire the clarity of the drafting presented therein. One thing that has caught my eye is the way membranes (roof membranes, air/vapour barriers, etc) are shown in details. I have uploaded an example here: http://tinyurl.com/cnpcj

I would like to know how best to produce such a line in AutoCAD. Ideally, I think the line I want would include the heavy dashes *and* the line on either side, like this: http://tinyurl.com/77ph3 To make life easy, the line would be justified to one side (probably impossible, but I thought I'd ask.)

For those who would like to know, I created that last example by creating a basic dashed linetype with dashes and blanks of equal length. Then I draw a polyline and fillet all vertices to 4mm. I then offset that PL 2mm on both sides. These last two will be the "surfaces" of my membrane. I then select the original PL and set to my membrane linetype and set its global thickness to 4mm.

Finally, the line must work with PL width settings and LTScale to give me any thickness and dash length combination I desire.

FWIW, my example .DWG is here: http://tinyurl.com/8u984

I hope others I intrigued by this and can puzzle it out, or, perhaps, its dead easy and some expert will lay it all out for us in one snappy reply!

Thanks in advance.

Hmm... I know I am resurrecting an ancient topic, but there must be a few afficianados of Detail's drafting style in residence here. Has anyone ever tried to create such a linetype?

I don't think it is possible to create a linetype in autocad that includes hatching. Creating the line you described in the drawing is not a big deal, even on a curve.

if you're using 2006 or later, you can create a dynamic block that has hatching like that line. Any time you want to use that "line" you can pull it off your tool palettes window and tell it where to go, how long to be, etc. Go through the tutorial, it'll explain it better than I can.

ajliebch: you are correct, but they can incorporate shapes. The tricky part is getting the lines on either side!

mlml: That is a reasonable suggestion, but a Dynamic Block wouldn't handle curves, splines, plines, etc. like a linetype would, and they don't draw at any length. e.g if the length of the dashes is 5mm, then a line of 25mm and one of 26mm will both show as 25mm.

Do others salivate over the drawings in Detail the way I do?
