I just want to know what buildings you think are iconic of postmodern architecture. Probably, Guggenheim Bilbao or one like that. Do you think the Walt Disney Concert hall is an iconic building?
I never would have thought of that building as PoMo, but once I saw it, I concur. A very, VERY Mannerist take on a common and traditional building type in Prague.
Let's talk. By iconic, do we just mean often photographed and talked about? Or do we mean good, and worthy of emulation?
Consider the Vanna Venturi house. I've seen it lots of times, I thought it was a church. Had you said, "No, its a community center" I would have believed it. But a house?
There are some things I like about it. I live clerestory windows and skylights, and it has those in abundance, but the facade...yechhh! All that big blank wall with nothing to relieve the eye. Its kind of like a guy who is all forehead. And where is the homeyness. Is there any girl out there dreaming of growing up and living in a house just like this? I think not.
Okay. It is time to crucify me. But if you are going to do that share the wealth. Come over to my site and leave some comments there. I have a site dedicated to residential architecture. I am just an amateur - a fan of architecture as it were, and I would love to have others, even those who have totally different opinions, drop by and leave comments. You might check out my page on postmodernism at http://www.house-design-coffee.com/postmodern-architecture.html or, in case they strip that out just come to house-design-coffe dot com.
BTW, don't take me wrong. I actually like much postmodernism, but in extremis its arrogant, decadent and not very good. Stata? Come on, its like Gehry dropped his model and that is the way they built it. Our senses rebel against the anarchy of his walls. Eisenman. Please - his buildings are like a lecture telling me how much I suck. I don't need to be deconstructed. I need to live.

On Fred & Ginger:

Having seen it, I now like it.
ok
I just want to know what buildings are iconic since 90s. Thanks
Do you know what post modern means?
Just kidding. Its a trick question. No one does.
Stirling's Staatsgalerie is among them. It kind of made any later buildings unnecessary.
Do you know what post modern means?
everything after modern is post-modern
And now the thread gets interesting
Oh, and here's another for the list
Thanks for posting Piazza d'Italia, Brian. I wanted to, but can't figure out how to post image links. #$%@#$@!!

Pruitt–Igoe?
You know, my professors in school showed us that Venturi house, and I still don't see what's interesting or unique about it.
My favorite post-modernist architect is Cesar Pelli, so anything he did would be considered good post-modernist architecture in my book.
This is what is interesting and unique about the Venturi House, and what makes it one of "the most iconic buildings of postmodernism."
In my book, you don't get much more iconic than the Portland Building, the AT&T Building and the Vanna Venturi House.
Edit: Nothing against Cesar Pelli, I have a soft spot for Argentinians.

Not to be confused with ironic, which can also be used to describe postmodernism.
