I read an article about Tookie's funeral and they had talked to some of the Crips members outside. The one guy responded "That's my role model, man. He's the CEO of the Crips." Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Tookie denounce gangs and regret ever forming the Crips? So, if you really knew anything about Tookie and respected him...wouldn't you NOT be a Crip? I mean, there was a prerecorded speech where Tookie said "Teach them not to follow in our destructive footsteps."

Either the young men you saw misunderstood the dear departed, or his "redemption" and "renunciation" of gangs was, perhaps, insincere...?
