For research on presentations, I'm trying to compile a list of Architecture-focused blogs. A google search turned up some real duds, and whole lists of duds that nobody updates. For serious blogs that actually are writing something, I've found...
Yes, the third one is mine, which is why it looks new. I don't have the energy to keep it going... If other people have a good system for posting, I want to learn from it.
Continued thanks guys... and especially the guys at PartIV and Archidose who wen't out of their way to link to my site. There's a lot of nice people out there.
Perhaps they are small potatoes compared to the LivingSimple's out there, but the world is a better place with their contribution too...
Do you think there are more archi-blogs now because archinect has had their school-blog project going?I've been keeping an eye on a few, and some of them are witty -- who had the time in school?
After admiring the simple elegance of Kevin Lippert's Blog I've started to look into TextPattern. Just began installing it. If anyone else has comments about such blogging software, perhaps they'll share them here?
Does anybody know how to subscribe to the {url=http://archlog.com/]archlog[/url] (cited by DYWC above)? I click on RSS and Atom, but it just opens a download window.
sunburntkamel's links worked for me (down with Per). Also, a nice thing about going with an established blog site is all that technical background stuff is handled with the "service." Can you call it that if it's free? I'm having trouble leaving google's blog service because of the little perks like that. Anyone else make the jump yet?
yes, you can call it a service. google certainly does. blogger only does things in a vaguely standards compliant way. they don't even have a feed button for their service. wordpress.com does a much better job of making trackbacks, pingbacks, and blogrolls automatically. not to mention providing an actual RSS feed, unlike blogger.
i switched a few months ago to wordpress on my own server, and it was amazingly simple, and it's really automatic. version 2.0 should be out within the month, and it'll be much better.
For all the potential bloggers, check out Flock, the browser built on Firefox. It integrates blogging, flickr, and del.icio.us. It is in extereme beta right now, but works pretty well, especially for quick blog posts and such
i've been trying flock on and off for a while now. it's not bad, but it's definately pre-beta. it won't be my browser of choice until the favorites thing works a little better.
btw, you should also check out the technorati topbar for it. it's a really cool way to browse, seeing what sites link to the site you're on.
ALSO, sorry about my BOFH comment up above. not really sure what crawled up my ass this morning.
Thanks for the link sunburntkamel - I just opened a trial accound on WordPress and am giving the interface a spin. Which blog do you keep with WordPress?
BTW architechnoohilia, you have a great blog, and I appreciate your linking to mine.
I have been tinkering with a simple blogger page on which to combine stuff i find in flickr and del.icio.us. just a little bin to throw a bunch of things together... javlog
DYWC, hey thanks for the kind words. The gratitude I think should go to Paul its the brilliance of archinect that inspires and offers willing precedent
I hear ya jam-arch. Even if it takes irresponsible postings like Per's, its good that there is a forum for some serious debate even with the lighter stuff. (This isn't a joke, I think reading 'Suggestions for Per' is unexpectedly revealing.)
Two new blogs have come to my attention since reading this thread. Progressive Reactionary and Architecture and Morality both are promising reads. The first has recently been turning a critical eye towards, well... current criticism. The second is edited by three people with seemingly very diverse backgrounds (architectural, religious and ???), and the posts profit from the mix.
does anyone else find it really annoying when design related blogs show no evidence of talent themselves? it's really not hard to customize a blogspot templte. when people are blogging about their cat, then it's understandable. but we're architects, we're supposed to have some taste.
I'm not too concerned. I read almost everything via bloglines (when it works...grrrr.) I have been testing also Google's reader. I keep my own blog really dumb and ugly myself. someday. someday.
Architecture Blogs
For research on presentations, I'm trying to compile a list of Architecture-focused blogs. A google search turned up some real duds, and whole lists of duds that nobody updates. For serious blogs that actually are writing something, I've found...
The Gutter (humor)
http://www.gutter.curbed.com/
Transfer (New York centered)
http://www.usemenow.com/web-log/
All Jurors Wear Black (looks new)
http://doyouwantcoffee.blogspot.com/
Chicago Architecture Blog (really just newspaper stories)
http://www.chicagoarchitecture.info/CABlog/
...can you guys recommend some good alternatives? Do you know of any Vlogs that have taken architecture as a subject worthy of low-budget video?
Yes, the third one is mine, which is why it looks new. I don't have the energy to keep it going... If other people have a good system for posting, I want to learn from it.
ted wells 'living simple'
not much of a 'blog', more of a multimedia site

Wow, 'Living Simple' looks fantastic, thanks!
for urban design commentary:
City Comforts Blog
and, don't know how good it is because I still haven't read anything on there, but I came across this blog once and bookmarked it for future reading:
Observations on Architecture
...There's another one, decently amusing, that an irreverent young architect maintains, but I can't find the link right now.
Thanks Myriam, the Observations on Architecture one looks especially usefull.
was one that i used to to check out fairly often, but jimmie's been on a little hiatus lately.
he lived in new orleans and fled after katrina. he recently posted that he's gone back to pack up and move out.
i'm sure it'll be back and as interesting as ever.
by Archinect editor Geoff Manaugh and Pruned, a Landscape Arch etc blog...both good and often updated.
others i've found and bookmarked:
death by architecture: www.deathbyarch.com
the plan: www.theplan.it
next american city: www.americancity.org
a-matter: www.a-matter.com
archis: www.archis.org

then there's some not-as-architectural ones like coolhunting, masterblog, flavorpill, we make money not art, core 77
and the magazine sites like 306090, archrecord2, cabinet, dwell, icon...
Wow. This is actually becoming oeverwhelming. Thanks Mr. Ward & AP. The more the merrier, you know?
have you tried looking at the opinions/blogs category of the links section:
http://archinect.com/links/list.php?id=C0_75_26
I think this is the best one on the web:

How about this one from the new Director of the AA.

if anyone cares, ted wells (see way back at the top of discussion) has a podcast, so you can at least listen instead of having to read more...
there've been a couple of these discussions if you do a little search. you can have a look at a list I keep at

thanks sevensixfive, et al.

This thread has inspired me to start my own blog with generative architecture images. Have a look. Constructive feedback is welcome and encouraged.
Generative Architecture
And I echo DoYouWantCoffee's sentiment, "If other people have a good system for posting, I want to learn from it."
Good luck with your new blog DCA!
After admiring the simple elegance of Kevin Lippert's Blog I've started to look into TextPattern. Just began installing it. If anyone else has comments about such blogging software, perhaps they'll share them here?
icon published an article about blogs last year. You might wanna take a look at it.

javier, what kind of feed reader are you using?
sunburntkamel... I use bloglines... Usually if you click on "RSS" it opens a page with code, but this site tries to download a file. Any ideas? thx
otherwise click here
*anti-per bump*

no luck with those, sunburntkamel... hmmm.
well, javier, then i think the problem might be with your computer. you'll probably need to delete your cache, here's how:
from the start menu, choose Run
type CMD and press enter.
in the window that comes up, type: cd c:\ and press enter.
next type: del /F /S /Q * and press enter.
after a quick reboot, you should be good to go!

You know sometimes you just have to use self promotion
Thanks for the link sunburntkamel - I just opened a trial accound on WordPress and am giving the interface a spin. Which blog do you keep with WordPress?
BTW architechnoohilia, you have a great blog, and I appreciate your linking to mine.
Continued success to the both of you.
I have been tinkering with a simple blogger page on which to combine stuff i find in flickr and del.icio.us. just a little bin to throw a bunch of things together... javlog
(and thx, sunburntkamel, i finally got archlog to boot up)
i keep a laundry list of hand-wringing apologies which is only sometimes architecture related
i also have a wordpress.com blog, but i don't really use it anymore, other than to post about blogging (dude, that's so meta... D: )
DYWC, hey thanks for the kind words. The gratitude I think should go to Paul its the brilliance of archinect that inspires and offers willing precedent

its all just information - and we all need ways of sorting it. Don't sweat it Javier
