Great thread. I would have to agree with most of the recommendations already given, but I am quite surprised that nobody has included anything (or everything) by Horace Silver and Art Blakey. Two giants of jazz.
Among current artists, having seen/heard Joshua Redmon live several times, I can tell you he is amazing. I never tire of what he comes up with.

Thrust - Herbie Hancock ... i have that mess on vinyl (and Future Shock of course).
I thought Herbie was a rapper with RockIt came out.
