my best friend's bedroom
where i was the first time i heard "smells like teen spirit"
now, "new slang" is a great song but "smells like teen spirit" changed my life. it was a line in the sand, a line across which i could either cross or stay behind. i could either stay behind in a world of musical artifice and meaninglessness (although guns'n'roses actually was ok) or i could let a song get absolutely under my skin and become part of my soul. i look back now and i own that song, everyone my age did.
a tv show i used to watch (vastly, vastly underrated because it was on nickelodeon of all places), "the adventures of pete and pete", had an episode where the little pete went all over town and did everything imaginable to find a song he'd heard just once coming out of someone's garage. he just couldn't find it again. that, strangely enough, was the way it was with SLTS and me. i thought the title of the song was "here we are now, entertain us" and nobody i knew knew who sang the song. that is until my friend got the columbia house catalog. 12 cds for a penny.
that being said i sure haven't heard "firewater burn" by the bloodhound gang in a while...think i'll go rectify that right NOW.
pete and pete was the greatest show. Artie was the best and the episode where older pete was trapped in a car with his dad and he had flash cards to help him think of things to talk to his dad about really hit home when i first saw it. Plus petunia, little petes tattoo, was hot. I was in a bar not too long ago and they played the pete and pete theme song in the bar. I think it was by "they might be giants" anyone know for sure?

the latter's cover of lilac wine (a la nina simone) gives me chills. and of course the brilliant cover of his da's hit, "halleluja". just plain FINE music...
