Dubai: the city of the 21st century!

any idea on what would an average salary be for a white american out of an ivy league masters of architecture program with 1 year of work experience?

hmm .. around $5500/- I'm not saying that you would get around that much .. but you could.. also check this out

and .. yeah .. dubai hardly has any oil ... not even enough to sustain their (the oil industry's) office ... it's Abu dhabi ( the capital of the country ) that has all the oil .. and they have enough oil for 150 years .. + more than enough gas reserves ...

yeah so that thought can be given a rest ... :)

Guys have you seen the project roy2 posted, the new 27bn tourism project. It can't get any worse than this, they plan to build replicas of the world's tallest buildings in this project (and they don't look short either)

More details and pictures here

So now Dubai will have 4 chrysler tower ripoffs, 3 taj mahals, 2 eiffel towers, the empire state building, taipei 101, the petronas towers, bank of china, 2 burj dubais (yes that's right), the london eye, 2 sets of pyramids, a 330m tall big ben, 2 towers of pisa, and most likely a heap of other stuff.

It's too bad because dubai really have some great projects in the works. Too bad though because no matter how good they are this new one will make dubai the world's biggest joke.

beauty crap !!! what a load of it too ..

albob .. Did you hear about the "falconcity - the city of wonders" .. they've got this city "all designed" which has got replicas of all the ancient and modern wonders and semi-wonders of the world.
their advt. line goes something like "live at the eifel tower, work in the pyramids and dine at the taj mahal ... all in dubai"

I saw the model... words can't define how disgusted I was !!

Yup, I've seen it and that's why I said "2 eiffel towers, 3 taj mahals", etc. This new project isn't marketing themselves that way though. It's more for the entertainment. Still absolutely disgusting though and a pity because dubai's real skyline will be great but buildings that should become landmarks won't anymore because people will be too disgusted to even notice dubai's proper architecture

OK, moving on from that piece of shit:

What do you think of the new centrepiece for palm jumeirah? It's to replace the tulip-shaped thing that was there before.

Also the latest in the mega-tower craze: Burj al Alam (kinda getting sick of all the burjes). With such a design and at 484m it'll really make a big statement, even though burj dubai will be just down the road.

Go to www.burjalalam.com for some nice videos and pics.

Urbanist

Social context matters in city design. If Dubai is the city of the 21st century, then the 21st century is about a feudal aristocracy propped up by an army of stateless disenfranchised labor, corruption, nepotism/cronyism, political repression, state-sanctioned torture and other human rights abuses, enslaved child camel jockeys, and the slightest hint of religiously fundamentalist zeal. You can't build or design your way out of such a legacy without basic political change. You might, however, forestall that change by getting people hooked on your overly exuberant building program.

Dubai isn't Vancouver, whose physical form reflects a measure of social plurality, harmony between urbanism and the environment and creative experimentation. It isn't even Singapore, which, even though you may not agree with it, was built on a particularly compelling Modernist 20th century vision of social progress and cultural assimilation. If your vision of the future is just more of the same of what you had for the last several centuries, with more money and taller/shinier buildings then why bother at all?

The one thing I hate about the palm project is that all the roads on it appear to be for fast-moving traffic which would make the whole thing VEERY pedestrian unfriendly.

The cost of building structures on the 303 man-made islands of The World in Dubai will be around $7.6 billion according to the project's developer Nakheel. A huge marine transport system will connect the islands and allow its estimated 150,000 inhabitants to move around.

Well Sporadic supernova,
Looks like were coming to Dubai! My partner has been offered a fantastic position in the building industry unfortunatly the salary is not so attractive for the position. The contract is for 12 months and figured if we stay for 2 years, the second year will pay off and be able to come back to Australia with the credentials!

I've been told a couple can not live together unless married, but can get away with it! But if a female fall's pregnant she can be stoned to death if not married!
Is this true and does it apply to non-muslium's in their country?

I'm so scared but yet so excited!

hey ... well done sandra ....

dont worry about the marriage part .. but yeah .. do be careful about getting pregnant ... there have been cases where the woman has got into a lot of trouble .. ( it was a funny situation, she got pregnant outside the country ... but somehow it was not acceptable in uae ..) but not stoning .. thats in saudi ..!!

but yeah you can easily stay with your partner without any problems .. especially if you are caucasian/ australian ..

btw .. when are you getting here ... ?

in that part of the region, racism is not viewed upon in the same manner as it is in the post political correctness regions identified as the 'west'. the official arguent coukd be that islam is inherently anti-racist which makes sense on their pilgramage tours but not as much sense in the socio-economic setup. their is de facto respect (coupled with some inferiority complexes) regard for americans and europeans (essentially white). this reflects, as some of you might testify, in 'fantastic job opportunities' ... bluntly, money and position. generally, indians, pakistanis, philippinos, malasians...etc etc... are on the bottom end of the salary spectrum whether they perform the same as the americans/ europeans, worse or better.

this is how they relate to others. as a cultural comminuty within themselves, they still retain their sense of tribalism...be it expanded on a more national scale. this reflects in their tradition of unaccounted-for aid...priviledging some over others...a very defined heirarchy based not on job roles but on how close they are to the top sheikh or ,in saudi arabia, king. of course, this is a residue trait in any human structure anywhere..but whereas 'accountability' in the so-called west is, or tries to be, segrated from the structure...in that region, it is organically integrated. all this can translate into the western phenomena of , favouritism, bribery..etc. In the larger parts of the middle east, they might mean...gifts....brotherhood...

For expats who live in the gulf, there are two gulfs. The local one that is largely enclosed upon itself, very defined but rarely lets in outsiders. The other gulf is the oases of Starfucks, Intercon, compounds and expat schools, and of course work place.

Dubai, UAE, is simply a more hyper, exaggerated form of this duality. This does not mean that it is closer to the west. The duality allows for the exaggeration of one gulf without necessarily inflicting fatal damage on the other. In short, in Dubai, as in other regions of the gulf (rather than the middle east), there are mechanisms in place that allow a convenient seperation between those two aspects.

Interesting project, although seems a little inefficient. The building to the top left is apparently an opera house designed by Zaha Hadid.
