i like quondam.. for me it is like a chance museum on the net. i click whatever and it always goes to somewhere, sometimes parallel to a story, art, gossip, personal experience, plans, critisism, project drawings etc.. it covers a lot of seminal works by such architects and artists. i don't like the arrayed images that much.
you can bypass the esoteric ones if you like but they worth it if you can get into it once in a while.
something that like quondam has tons of stuff in it and not every click might be interesting to the reader.
i am glad somebody is doing it. it is an art piece..
otto was vado's prussian born grand daddy gordon was a painters son who through great parties and had a chainsaw and removed parts to reveal other parts. otto was an unknown but not fat.
I thought Rita was a "he" (St. La.) not a "she" who, in the old archinect, had a weird thread going on about "artistic" graphics with horrendous colours ... Per has not invented the wheel..
i just get only 50% of what he (and his Quondam vignettes) are all about... but the ones I've understood I've been very pleased to read -- there's some interesting stuff in his site...
rita, here is one arrayed. don't get me wrong i was more interested in some other stuff at the time. they are in the virtual museum.my earlier opinion is already changing. yes when i visited yale center for the british arts in 1980 it shooked me up a little. than i went to kahn's duplexes, not too far from venturi's mom's house and next day i visited venturi's office in the polish neigborhood, i told him about my experience, he said 'you are on the right track kiddo'..
for some reason yale center image came to my mind with the association of removement as in slicing. unlike corbu where his 'bubble' is usually encased..
The Esherick House by Kahn is right down the street from the Vanna Venturi House, but it isn't a duplex (although it does kind of look like a duplex).
The office of Venturi Scott Brown & Associates is in Manayunk, Philadelphia, an ethnically diverse neighborhood, now much gentrified. Manayunk is a Native American name/word. The last time I was at the VSBA office, I was waiting for a friend in the reception area. Someone else I knew came along and we chatted a bit. For some reason I laughed loudly (which is my nature) and then Venturi flew out of his office and looked at us in the reception area very sternly. During the subsequent lunch with my friend I asked why Venturi did that.
"You're not allowed to laugh in the office."
"Gosh, I wouldn't last there two minutes, would I?"
nice one. i am glad you guys did that. i was drugged in my visit..
then i went to state capitol in harrisburg asking the guy in charge if i could go see a still mill, still on speed. no chance..
then i went down to basement of the penn. capitol.. i've never new there was a tiky tiky land there with country home theme..
(abra as arch student..)
gordon cut buildings like gross cut cadavers. a nod to philly.

"If someone in the museum was truly interested in my work they would let me cut open the building. The desire for exhibiting the leftover pieces hopefully will diminish as time goes by. This may be useful for people whose mentality is oriented toward possession. Amazing, the way people steal stones from the Acropolis."

Bump, just because I'm working on "The Ride Home".
quixotic bullshit is no substitute for intelligence...leave the stupid stoner half articluated ruminations for the next commercial break.
that especially includes sad attempts to use weak formal similitude between gmc and vsb to drive metanarratives about conceptual art and architecture. vsb are slumming aestetes...and fuck louis kahn!
okay now i don't feel so embarassed about quondam. It wasn't that I thought it was too heady I just found myself having to do too much side reading to follow along.

3. An Architecture of Removement
Gordon Matta-Clark is a great architect of removement. Where did he get the ideas?
["Oh no, Gordon didn't know about "Stotesbury" until he visited his godfather there. Then he decided to stay there too until it was removed."
"Did Duchamp really crack all the mirrors?"
"Well, he likes to tell everyone he did. It all has to do with that Cassandra thing."]
Am I the only one who NEVER understands Rita Novel's posts?
i think that quondam thing broke her mind.
can you explain what quondam is, rita, so maybe some of us can be in on the game?
I would love to be interested.

i'm in with Medit.
and rita novel's comments are generally witty.
presence is appreciated, if not needed to add a bit of history to the forum.
Rita, don't you mean the quondam Gordon Matta-Clark?
His removements have been removed.

abracadabra, I'm not sure exactly what you mean by 'arrayed' images. can you give an example?

Gordon is busy (in the Pillsbury complex at Minneapolis) preparing for "Learning From Lacunae".
Otto and I got our haircuts this morning.
abracadabra, is that Yale Center for British Art pic a teeny clue as to what you do like?
Gordon moved into the remaining powerhouse a couple days later.

i like that Venturi looked at you Stern-ly.

Bump, just because I'm working on "The Ride Home".
No Marcel Breuer jokes, please.
Stephen/Rita/Quondam - congratulations on 1000 comments!
(PS - I'm a fan of the virtual museum as well)
PPS - speaking of VSB: are you really trying to suggest that they invented big round holes in walls? And that GMC ripped off the idea from them?
quixotic bullshit is no substitute for intelligence...leave the stupid stoner half articluated ruminations for the next commercial break.

aesthetes...thank you
765, all I did was look to see what was 'winning' in the architecture magazines while Matta Clark was in architecture schools.
As to holes is walls, note the PMP to Mikveh Israel connection.
This intrigues me though...

not without, looks like a hit a nerve. Just be glad I'm using a bow and arrow.
i'm so glad!
I didn't know quondam was a real word with a real meaning.
an architecture of removement
who knew?
Interesting comparison above....
I thought the Casa de Musica looked curiously dated but couldn't put my finger on it...
