I mainly do this as a way to know exposition and potential areas where there will be shadow or sun, but how that really impact your design in terms of placing some functions and/or in a design of exterior places , a specific areas ?
"Sun, Wind and Light: Architectural Design Strategies" by Mark DeZay and G.Z. Brown is a great resource, I'd advise looking through it. Your university should have either a copy or access to it. Cheers
How sun/shadow study of a terrain is impacting your design ?

Life should follow the sun....room planning should follow the sun, I hate having evening cocktails in the shade unless it's August in Arizona!
