How much do architects charge for a multifamily project?

Back home in the middle east, we charge by the miter, and I was wondering how does a multifamily building in Los Angeles gets a cost estimate for the design by a design firm?

Yes, although there are rules of thumb, such as a percentage  of the construction cost that is a guide line but its not what you propose to the client. You show projected hours for each type of design professional for example your consultant engineers and your drafting staff, mark it up as you see fit to cover your overhead- and that's the cost.

It also depends on the clients reputation, project delivery method, and the project schedule.
