Bridge pier

maryamdanesh

hi~ I was so curious with a question. I attached a picture of han river bridge.

Does any body knows why is the reason of making the holes in some of the bridge's piers?

I attentioned that only the piers in middle of bridge have holes.

Were those piers lifted and set in place or cast in place?

I think they might be for construction but I don't recall seeing these types of holes in piers before.

Over and OUT

Pass-thru holes for future services like water or power lines?

Maybe it's some weird Feng-shuay nonesense to let the dragon spirits pass.

Is no one here thinking those holes are an artistic addition by the civil p.eng?

Beams may have been slotted into those holes during construction to hold the formwork for the first deck segment, but that's just my best guess.  Now I'm curious myself, could you tell us the location?

Bridge spans are prefab, joints visible over the piers. No way they would have been poured in place.

Interesting that there is a catwalk at every pier - for assembly of the spans?
