I remember walking through the new Bonaventure Hotel lobby when I was in high school and being amazed. Later, I'd figure out some of the problems with it, and there are many. Still, it's a powerful use of form, space, material, light and water-- a useful illustration of the potential of architecture.
John Calvin Portman Jr passed on at 93 Love or hate him?
However, you feel about his work, he was a force of nature.
Hate? Really?

Only got to know his work through Guess the plan...liked his hair.
Portman really paved the way for many modern architects & developers. He was taking an equity stake on his designs before it was ok by the profession.
GM building in Detroit
I once got hopelessly lost in the Ren. Cen.
Pretty cool design, could use better signage.
I can see at least 4 of his buildings from my condo window here in ATL. The exteriors are ugly. Love his atriums though. Dislike the sky bridges.
