Choosing outer profiles of graphics

MusicFreakArchiGuy

I am a beginner in Adobe illustrator. I draw my 3D models in Sketchup
and export the view as 2D graphic in pdf format. Then in Adobe
Illustrator, I use either the lasso tool or manual click by click style
and/or dragging my box selection method to select the outer lines of any 3D view and edit  its lineweights to be thicker.

Is there a faster way to select outer edges of a 3D graphic? I have attached reference images (taken from books) to support my question. The doodle orange arrows are used by me to emphasize the outer lines

Duplicate the layer and use the Shape Builder tool to make the silhouette is what I do when pressed for time.
