I would suggest you get a lawyer who specialises on protection of intellectual property and he will let you know what options you have and what it will cost. From past experience I can say that a european union copyright for a simple demountable piece of furniture would cost you something like 300 Euros. This would give you ownership of a design for 5 years, so you would have to fork out another 300 Euros after that expires.
As the guy above pointed out, patents protect systems whereas copyrights protect specific designs.
I knew you were gonna say something like that D.C. The minute I posted. I should have clarified, one has grounds with the copyright. But yes anyone can sue. Someone has got to keep those lawyers in business to subsidize the architects after all.
