DC Department of Real Estate Services Launches Sustainable Design Guide

After a lot of work and effort from a great team, the DC Department of Real Estate Services (DRES) have just published online our: Existing Buildings & Small Projects: Sustainable Design Guide.

I mentioned previously to many of you that we have been working on this for a while and are extremely excited about it. It started out as a plan to develop a guide that would simply inform the design of our non-LEED capital projects that were not explicitly covered by the DC Green Building Act (e.g. Tenant Improvements < 30,000 SF, Site Work, Small retrofits, etc…). It grew into something a bit more comprehensive as we realized the true benefit would be to establish a resource that uses aggressive performance goals as the metric for successful, sustainable decision making across the board. This is not meant to be all inclusive or a hard line policy plan of what DRES capital project teams must do, but rather a menu of solutions and recommended progressive best practices for meeting the growing challenges of Water Resource Management, Energy Management, and Materials & Waste Management.

Please check it out, share it with colleagues, use it as a base for other policies, etc…
We hope that those of you involved in design and construction throughout the Mid-Atlantic region will find it as useful as we do.

Sustainable Design Guide

Have a great day,

(Washington, DC) The Department of Real Estate Services (DRES) announced today the release of Existing Buildings and Small Projects: Sustainable Design Guide. The document serves as a performance based design playbook for DRES officials to better align decision-making with the city’s green building goals. It will facilitate creative, sustainable, durable, and equitable design and development solutions on the District’s real estate portfolio.

“We are very excited about the flexibility of the solutions that this guide provides to our project teams,” said Mark Chambers, DRES Sustainable Development Program Manager. “DRES manages a diverse assortment of construction and renovation projects. Regardless of the task, this guide will be a resource that enables us to set aggressive, sustainable targets for any project.”

The guide also allows DRES to expand its commitment to green building principles, energy and waste management, water conservation, and national best practices in sustainability.

“DRES is actively working to promote the principles of sustainable development in our construction projects,” said Brian J. Hanlon, Interim Director of DRES. “Together with the LEED Certification Guide DRES released in 2009, this guide will help the District to transform our real estate portfolio as we endeavor to remain a national model for green government.”

Existing Buildings and Small Projects: Sustainable Design Guide will serve as a tool for the District’s capital construction citywide.
