I am looking at the Precision M3800 from Dell, as I don't think I can face lugging the larger Precision M6800 around. Plus the M3800 has a lower price tag. Is it suitable for general Autocad and Adobe CS use, perhaps with an aim of doing 3d and basic rendering in the future.
It comes with a 2 GB NVIDIA Quadro K1100M but I've read a few bad reports here about Nvidia Quadros in general. Have they improved?
If you can wait, wait for Skylake. The hardware is from 2013 or 2014 and if you want this to last, get something newer.
Don't get the Dell SSD option. Get the least amount of memory pre-configured. The 3800 is user-upgradeable so whatever you can get yourself, do so. That config is only about $1200 either through resellers or Dell Outlet so do not spend more.

...the full spec is:
It should be able to run Autocad and PS. Curious, what is the price tag? You might want to look at a $900 gaming laptop.

The price tag for the spec above was around the £1,100 mark.
Skylake looks good, I wonder how long I'll have to wait for Dell...
This report doesn't look too good for the Nvidia Quadro K1100M:
