Floor outlets in rated floor assemblies

jckii

Anybody got experience with using electrical/data floor outlets in a 2hr rated floor assembly (4" concrete on unprotected 3 1/2" steel deck)? Can I even use a recessed floor box, or am I limited to poke-thru's? UL is a total bitch to navigate - I would be eternally grateful for any comments or pointers on this, and even more so for a couple of specific product recommendations.

I'm not sure if something like this would work. They're fire-rated boxes, but they don't specifically say they're OK for the installation you describe. I'm sure you could find out.

I'm sure there are others out there.

Not to pass the buck (-sure, its always good to figure things out for yourself, but stop short of spinning your wheels-) but your electrical consultant, if you have one, really ought to have a line on this question.

try wiremold company: here
They have some floor products which meet all sorts of fire resistance numbers without affecting the assembly it's in. They use intumescent material within the fixture that when exposed to heat/fire, it seals up.
I didn't see the product on their site, but you can always call them up.

You are mentioning power/ data connections so it would be helpful to know how many you need and in what size a room.

if its a NASA-style computer lab program with 30 stations then maybe ramp up and do a raised access floor. The client will appreciate your thoughtfulness especially when they find that they want to re-arrange a front facing lab into a horseshoe shape lecture room.

if you have 2 computers then maybe you should place those stations on a wall or go wireless. Battery life and WAPs can transform any room into an instant computer lab.
