I am in International graduate, I have several interviews recently, the principals like my portfolio and keep saying my works are interesting. From the face-to-face interview, I can strongly feel their appreciation to my works. But because I told them I only can work for them in late June or July. They said they can’t extend me an offer at this time and ask me follow up with them in May to see their staffing need. I have heard this “Staffing need” several times in those interviews.
Is it just an excuse and signal for them to decline me or they really need to see the need at June?? Has someone really got an offer after waiting for a month? Or I should keep looking for new opportunities?
It means they need someone now, and you can't start now, so when you CAN start, call them back and see if they need anyone then.
Firms here do not usually hire two months in advance. In fact they usually wait to hire someone until the last possible second, and then they need them to start IMMEDIATELY because they are already backlogged with work.
Here's how it works: Say a firm lands a big new project. They will usually go as far as they can on that project with their own existing labor - and then when a) they see that the client really is paying the bills, and the project is not going to suddenly get cancelled, and b) they cannot possibly continue the project without adding staff, THEN they put an ad up, start interviewing as soon as possible, and hire someone to start immediately.
Firms here can't afford to staff in advance of a project, because they don't usually have extra money lying around to hire someone unless they really need it. So you saying "thanks but I can't start work until June" means that really you should not even be interviewing until June. I would say to do exactly what these firms recommend... wait until it gets closer to your start date and then call around & see who is hiring THEN.

but knowing how it works makes me feel better, because I know they are not lying to me. in my country, company will even hire you half a year in advance.
where you are lucky? here in japan it is the same but mostly for larger firms. we hire people as we need them, pretty much according to the scenario that manta laid out.

they probably need someone right away. so their staffing need is immediate. 2 months from now it likely would not be. unless you get lucky.
So you mean they were really interested in my works, but as a company, they won't extend me an offer 2 months in advance??
the reason why I ask this is because sometime American is too polite, I don't know when they are telling me the truth,haha
