I have been out of work from the architecture field for about two years. yahda.... yahda. In the meantime I have waited table and have a job right now that entails licensing contractors for the state. As of right now I am just trying to wait things out till the more jobs open up on my neck of the woods. I am looking for someone to view my work sample and discuss the best way to put my foot forward. Portfolio website information and so forth.
On the other hand, I really enjoy the management of large projects and residential architecture. What would be an easy career jump for right now. Construction management? I have ten years experience in the arch. field. For right not I don't plan on taking my licensing exams. I would rather work for a design build firm, engineering or construction firm and put my skills into something more lucrative. Thanks.
If you plan on staying in the profession for the long haul, the best advice in my opinion is to get your license. One of the first questions that potential employers are likely to ask is "you have ten years of experience, why aren't you licensed"?
Keep your skills current...take a Revit class at a community college, keep a sketch book of design ideas, improve your SketchUp skills, etc.
Your portfolio could be stellar, but there is a lot of competition out there right now. Firms are still wary about hiring and they are not so willing to train people, especially those with 10 years of experience.
You could try jumping over to construction management, but a lot of licensed architects with current skills are trying to make the jump as well.
