print a portfolio in LA

kikimonkey

Hi, i have never printed a portfolio before.
I would like to know where i can print it with a high quality.

do I usually get to choose the paper type?
i want to print it on thicker paper like chipboard..

I am using Indesign and am wondering about the margin..

I know it is impossible to print from edge to edge. how much margin do I have to take into account?

What printing store prints without margins?

please let me know one place to print cheap for a test and another one for a final.

Thanks you. I appreciate your help!

try blair graphics...call and ask them these questions?

if you make your pages smaller than standard paper size they can trim down, include crop marks...

Most custom print shop (not kinkos) can print higher quality. I've used Plot Pro and they were OK. Be sure to do a test print before placing entire order.

You always get to choose the paper type.
I don't think most printers can handle chipboard. The thickest is usually cardstock. Nice print shops have nice printers, they are not likely to risk having your chip board stuck in them.

marginless prints don't usually turn out well. The safest way is to print with margin and then crop it out. Most stores have the option to print without margins but sizes are limited. And pretty much all shops will crop margins for you too.

No high quality print shop prints cheap (do remember to ask for student discount if you are one). To test print qulity: Print one or two pages that has the most color and line weight variation as a sample at your final print shop. remember, Calibration of the printers, how much ink is left in the printer all play a part in the final product. So you want your test to be as close to the final as possible.

If you are test print is for review of content and not print quality, do it at Kinkos.

finally, consider binding. for a real "book" or magazine type binding, you'll probably need an online printer like lulu.com.

Good luck.
