My unscientific statistics so far show that you can generally expect to get a 10% response rate on applications sent out. 10 actually human generated emails for every 100 applications, all 10 of which will essentially say "we are not hiring, but hey, thanks for wasting space on our email server."
I have also found that resumes sent on Tuesday and Wednesday usually get more response than ones sent other days of the week. Monday tends to be the worst.

get your own website, or some other place to post your portfolio that reports page visits and isp's.
