west coast list

dfowler

I am trying to compile a list of really really cool firms to begin bombarding with job applications upon my pending graduation in May. The cities I am most interested in happen to all be on the west coast: San Fran, Seattle, Portland (or similar-not LA). I am looking for small firms doing really innovative work, the kind of place where I probably won't get a job and if I do I probably won't get paid well. The more interesting the better. Any help would be appreciated.

just to bump my own topic-

So far, some of the firms I've found that look like they are producing interesting work are:
farm-out of Portland http://www.farm-arc.net/projects.htm
lead pencil studio-in Seattle http://www.leadpencilstudio.com/main
zeroplus-also in Seattle http://www.0-plus.com/zeroplus2.html

the problem with these types of firms is they don't have room for just a designy/rendery person. They need someone with 3 years of AutoCad and CD's, plus great graphics and rendering in their portfolio, and friendly and good looking, etc. Makes it tough just coming out of school.

gvg, I believe it, but I'm still going to try. Maybe if I get a strong list of firms, do well with my thesis, and sell myself just right I'll have a chance...Or at least hopefully make a couple contacts.

i just attended a lecture by houseandhouse, from san fran. it was very interesting to hear the way they speak about architecture and practicing. they insist on a very hands on, material value of architecture-something that seems to receive lip service at best from most contemporary practices. kathy described a wash basin that she sculpted herself, and understanding and pleasure taken from this connection to the work. i think this is even somewhat radical today

yeah, but the work of house+house leaves a lot to be desired... a lot.
