any resources, books, websites you found particularly helpful for becoming familiar and somewhat competent in using these programs?

I'd say that the OP would have had more than enough time to learn sketchup in the time it took them to write their question.

I have a great YouTube tutorial that has over 50 videos in detail for sketch up if you want it. With auto focus on blocks and standards, each office will have it's own title blocks. Using your AutoCAD layers were most annoying to me, but my old job had it's own standards for that as well so I would focus on the blocks and getting use to the interface.
