Tian Shan Mountain House

Prior to Russian domination, the Kazakh landscape inspired domestic tradition. This project returns to landscape to explore contemporary Kazakh habitation and lifestyle. Located in the foothills of the dramatic Tian Shan Mountains, a site strategy emerges from the beauty of the land and highly unstable earthquake and soil conditions. Sizable foundations and cascading terraces anchor the house to the hillside. Each interior space extends to gardens, terraces or courtyards while engaging long views. The result suggests a taming of the rugged landscape into a formal precinct with earthworks that mirror the precision of the house, blurring the distinction between inside and out, between nature and artifice.
