In the new urbanist community of Civano, a private ballet company has flourished and grown out of its existing small dance studio.  The clients wished to stay in the neighborhood, so a small lot designated for mixed use was purchased.  The new building will contain a large ballet studio, office, waiting room, and apartment on the upper level.  Major design issues were scale, proportion and light: how to insert this large commercial building into the mostly residential fabric in a manner that both compliments the existing, is different enough to stand out appropriately, and allow for as much natural sunlight as possible.  One solution included the running ban of vertical windows on the east elevation.  The pattern provides a sense of movement and kinetic energy, allows ample light while restricting views from the outside, and provides a bold statement for the neighborhood to enjoy.
