Anupa Residence: A Warm Embrace of Wood and Curved Lines

[A Home Tailored to Needs] Every home is as unique as its inhabitants. Often, designers are called upon to translate the homeowner's personality into a functional space. The Anupa Residence, a 500-square-meter single-family home in Salaya, engaged mArchten to refine the interior design to align more closely with the existing architecture and the homeowner's specific needs. The house features a living room, kitchen, storage room, and gym on the first floor, a study, a collectibles corner, and a laundry room on the second floor. The third floor, like most traditional homes, houses the bedrooms and a prayer room.

[Subtracting the Excess, Adding the Missing] The renovation began with a careful management of walls and openings. Some walls were demolished to enhance connectivity between spaces. For instance, the entrance hall leading to the living room was equipped with a lightweight sliding door instead of a wall, allowing for flexibility while still defining the space. The laundry room was also expanded by removing a wall.

Additionally, the positioning of windows was adjusted to optimize natural light and external views. Unnecessary windows were transformed into expansive wall surfaces, providing space for a TV and cabinets. This resulted in a harmonious arrangement of the living room, dining area, and kitchen. The side of the house that received ample natural light was fully opened, emphasizing the double-height space and creating a sense of grandeur.

Despite the demolition and reconstruction of walls, the renovation respected and preserved the original layout of the house. The orientation of spaces and the placement of doors, which were intentionally staggered, remained unchanged. Furthermore, the location of overhead utilities was carefully managed to avoid interfering with the household shrine.

[A Harmonious Blend of Elements] Once the spatial layout was finalized, the focus shifted to the interior design. mArchten was tasked with creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Light-colored wood and white furniture were chosen as the primary materials, emphasizing simplicity and tranquility.

This simplicity, however, was not achieved by reducing the space to bare walls, bland furniture, or monotonous corridors. Instead, it was a result of meticulous attention to detail. For example, the furniture throughout the house features curved lines, complementing the subtle lighting design. Combined with the warm tones of the wood, this creates a welcoming and enveloping ambiance.

[Attention to Every Detail] The attention to detail in this home is evident in numerous ways. For instance, the glass railing on the second-floor display shelf allows those in the living area below to admire the collectibles. Custom-designed cabinets seamlessly integrate into the hallway, providing additional storage and adding dimension to the otherwise plain wall.

For the homeowner who enjoys various activities, mArchten designed a versatile storage system in the storage room, including both cabinets and wall-mounted racks that can be rearranged as needed. The result is a home that is both simple and inviting, with remarkable details that offer delightful surprises.
