We designed this common central open space for a new residential development on the former site of the Brooklyn Navy Brig with a team of architects and developers. The development includes low income housing, supportive housing and market rate housing as well as retail space and other community facilities. Our design organizes the development around a central landscape experience. Common gardens, open to all residents, provide a strong community focus for the complex. A playground, wooden pergola, and paved plazas with benches and table seating all face inward toward a large linear lawn. Apartment tower community rooms and individual townhouses both have direct access to the landscape spine of the site. Storm water is directed to a central runnel that empties into an infiltration basin.
Navy Green won the 2017 ULI New York Award for Excellence in Development and is a LEED Certified Neighborhood Development.
