Avalon Bay Urban Housing Landscape

Avalon Bowery Place is set in the heart of New York City.  With scant land available, the complex’s landscape is composed of five distinct parts occurring behind, on top of and in a former alley adjacent to its buildings.  The new landscape melds the disparate parts together, firmly roots the project in the urban neighborhood and provides much needed open space for the building’s residents and the neighborhood.

The project includes three landscapes at the ground level and two on building rooftops.  The three lower level landscapes include the entry plaza to Bowery Place, the garden courtyard directly beyond the lobby and a pedestrian mews located across the street.  These landscapes are linked visually and through materials selection to form an axis perpendicular to the public street unifying the complex at the ground level.  The roof terraces, in contrast, are physically isolated landscapes in the sky.  They enjoy a sunny exposure and participate in the aerial archipelago formed by the landscape of city rooftops.
