VERTICAL HOUSE
ENLARGING THE ENVELOPE
REVOLVING AROUND THE STAIR
Complete renovation of triplex apartment in a brownstone near Columbus Avenue and Seventeenth Street, in a Historic district. The client program called for combining duplex and one bedroom unit with access to the rear yard garden. The rear masonry wall was substantially removed so one can view the garden from any corner of the house and bring natural light and air into the space. Open sculptural stair was introduced to combine various levels. This vertical loft is anchored by staircase that floats throughout the house. It also epitomizes the blending of metals, woods and faux treatment used: recycled aluminum, brushed carbon steel, granite countertops with white Venetian plaster. The interior space features both form and function. Masonry volumes clear planes, materials that accentuate the natural light and modern furniture with simple pops of color.
