Rick Mather leads a busy architectural, masterplanning and urban design practice. Founded in 1973, completed work spans both new build and renovation with a special interest in the cultural and education sectors. This is combined with a recognised and innovative expertise in the intelligent
reinterpretation of existing structures and in sustainable low energy building.
Recent projects include masterplans for the South Bank Centre in London, and for the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. In 2001 Rick Mather Architects were selected from an international field of competitors to plan and design a major expansion and renovation of The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond VA. It is RMA's first major project in the U.S. The $100 million building program will include a three-acre sculpture garden, extensive new galleries, educational facilities, visitor service areas, administrative offices and a parking deck.
Completed projects include the award winning £8m extension and renovation of Dulwich Picture Gallery, the new £10m Wallace Collection Centenary project, and the new £20m Neptune Court at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich. Other examples of the practice's design standards include RIBA Award winning projects such as a private house in Hampstead, the ARCO Building at Keble College, Oxford, and The Times Newspaper headquarters building in London's Docklands.
Innovation - sustainable building environments
Low energy, sustainable building and planning lies at the very heart of the practice's work. The practice is committed to giving clients the benefits of modern technology, achieved within a design context of the highest quality, as witnessed by the many RIBA Awards won by the practice.
Projects at the University of East Anglia, Keble College Oxford, and The Times Newspaper headquarters building are all acknowledged by the technical and architectural world as pioneering but appropriate solutions to energy and maintenance issues, and all won RIBA Awards.
