HISTORY AND OVERVIEW OF FIRM

SBJ Group is a full service architectural and interior design firm founded in 1967. During these past 40 years, we have completed a wide range of commissions, including high-rise condominiums, international hotels, boutique hotels, office buildings, and adaptive reuse and preservation projects. In many commissions, the firm has provided turnkey services, including architecture and interior design. Our hospitality projects often include our full scope of services. The combination of architects and interior designers inhabiting the same space allows us to have a seamless integration of the two disciplines. The work of the firm has been extensively published and has won numerous awards for its design excellence.

HISTORIC PRESERVATION AND ADAPTIVE REUSE

Historic preservation was an early focus of the firm. Over the years, we have successfully completed the renovation and restoration of numerous historic buildings, many of which have been listed on the State of National Register of Historic Properties. Adaptive reuse of obsolete buildings has always been one of our major endeavors.  We have adaptively reused many building types including factories and mills, hospital buildings, carriage houses, stables, and other obsolete mercantile buildings.

RESIDENTIAL PROJECTS

We also specialize in ground up large-scale residential projects, to which we bring a veneer of hospitality. As New York City designers, efficiency is paramount. We have learned never to waste an inch and have never been permitted to waste a dime (no unlimited budgets for us). This forces us to be pragmatic and innovative. This practical approach, grounded in the real world, provides a strong, functional, backbone to everything that we do. 

HOSPITALITY DESIGN

The firm has designed hospitality projects since its early years. Our design approach revolves around the comfort of the guest. We always search for a timeless idiom to define and distinguish our hotels and all of our hotels have their own individual identity, which is derived from context, location, program, and the economic parameters that have been established by the Owner. More importantly, what distinguishes us from our colleagues is our practical, pragmatic approach, grounded in the real world that provides a strong, functional, backbone to everything that we do.
