School as Playground

The brief was to create an architecture school to accommodate different faculties from around the world in a single building in the city of New York. The fundamental idea for the project is the school as a playground. In order to accommodate the five architecture schools under one roof, the concept was that of a container; a series of open and diverse spaces that create an experience for the students stimulating their creativity. The diversity of choice enhances and promotes the exchange between different students. Formally, the school works as a series of voids where transparency is used as dominant tool for displaying internal activities and promoting a sense of spatial integration and overlap.

Play is essential for the development of an architectural student. Within the proposal play is translated through the design–making processes. The school provides the students with a diverse scale interrelated spaces where they can showcase their projects, allowing for constant interchange of knowledge and skills. It is a place that blurs the boundary of users and activities; a place to explore, play and learn.
