Girardota´s Metropolitan Coliseum

First prize winner of the national public architecture competition for the design of the Metropolitan Coliseum in Girardota, Antioquia. The project is part of a group of buildings promoted by the AMVA (Area Metropolitana del Valle de Aburra) in order to foment education, sport and recreation throughout the different municipalities outside the borders of Medellín. The design proposal is based on the consolidation of the coliseum as the centre of the existing sports facilities.

The design strategy was to create an strong urban gesture that could attract people from all Medellin´s metropolitan area creating a new congregation space. With the creation of a public plaza on the roof, the building could not only be a sport facility but also a recreational space where big shows and concert can take place. Using the topography of the site, the building manages to create an urban connection through the roof, turning it into an extension of the public space. Functionally the building is divided into two parts, one that is mainly the sports area and the other that concentrates all the administrative areas of the program. At the interior of the project, it seeks to create a flexible central space that could transform depending on the use and activities that takes place.
