You may have seen our review of Lydia Kallipoliti's book, The Architecture of Closed Worlds, or you may be planning to attend our event for the book tomorrow featuring Kallipoliti and Lars Müller, the publisher of her book, but you may not have known about her work and research that led to the landmark publication.
Lydia Kallipoliti is an architect, engineer and scholar. She holds a Diploma in Architecture and Engineering from A.U.Th in Greece, a SMArchS in design and building technology from MIT, as well as a Master of Arts and a PhD from Princeton University. While in school, Kallipoliti studied the culture of waste; or, as Kallipoliti described it, the "generative potential of obsolete objects and spaces." Kallipoliti's interest in waste has since expanded to the issue of environmental politics as they affect architectural production, policy and design.
Her research led to a position as an Assistant Professor at Syracuse University, an Assistant Professor Adjunct at Columbia University (GSAPP) and at the Cooper Union, where she also served as a Senior Associate at the Institute for Sustainable Design, and currently as Assistant Professor and Geofutures Co-Director for the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
The accolades given to the exhibition led to the three year long process of editing the book under Lars Müller publishers and with the assistance of the Storefront for Art and Architecture, as well as a series of symposia with names including Beatriz Columina, Mark Wigley, Michelle Addington and Nader Tehrani.
Join us at Archinect Outpost on March 6th, from 7-9pm to host Lydia Kallipoliti and her newest book, The Architecture of Closed Worlds: Or, What Is the Power of Shit? Kallipoliti will provide a lecture, followed by a conversation with Lars Müller and a book signing.
