Dunas

Located in the Chihuahua desert of Samalayuca, the project integrates the history and production of the distillate [sotol] through a dynamic journey. Dunes, is an architectural object defined by its landscape. It is based in the endemic land where the sotol plant is born. The “sotolera” materializes the visible contrasts within the desert landscape. In the morphology, a balance is maintained through a linear axis and curves that allude to the infinity of the region. The building extends through the landscape to maintain a focus towards the view of the sotol plantations. The architecture designed frames the landscape in order to generate a relationship between the interior and exterior, blurring the limits of space. The architecture welcomes an internal landscape by adapting to the external. The architectural work is integrated into the desert through its materiality, colors, and textures that allude to the origins of the sotol’s production. Throughout the journey, there is a mix of the public and the private spaces. The tour will delve into what sotol is and the spatial experience surrounding it, from its humble beginnings with its cultivation, to its production and distillation. Dunas is a fusion of history, culture, and leisure translated into space, a tribute to the hands and the artisan processes behind its production.
