This retreat is perched atop a residential building in Lincoln Park. The penthouse below is a combination of two units, allowing a 3,400 sf roof space. Program requirements included a kitchen, dining area, lounge, sun deck, outdoor shower, and sport court.
Our design feels like a rooftop yard. Terraced steps connect levels of decking made from hardwood and large-format porcelain tiles. Planters contain ornamental grasses, allium, mint, and wild oregano. Decking is set back from the parapet wall to reveal the green roof and a border of flowering sedum.
A “forest” of birch trees screens a neighboring building for privacy, and willows form a lush backdrop for the sundeck. The dining area floats in a lake of green sedum, and the lounge is oriented for sunset views.
A playful element is an oversize hammock integrated into the decking. Suspended above the green roof, it offers relaxing space for summer naps. The sundeck, atop the elevator shaft, provides Lake Michigan views and shelters the lounge seating below.
Sustainable elements include drought-tolerant plantings, water-wise drip irrigation, green roof by LiveRoof, sustainably-harvested FSC Garapa and Ipe decking, and LED lighting.
