ATRIUM HOUSE

This Buena Park home was designed in 1978 and had not been updated since construction. The new owners wanted a total renovation which reinterpreted the floor plan to open the space and maximize natural light. The program called for a minimalist kitchen, master suite, spa-like bathrooms, study, art studio, and multiuse space for adults and kids.

At the center of the home is an enclosed, two story atrium, a unique element that was underused in the original design. Working with the owners, we reimagined the atrium as family space. We removed walls to integrate the atrium with the rest of the interior and added a glass roof, creating a light well for the home. The space is bordered by a rock garden with bamboo in a custom blackened steel planter and is further defined by a sunken floor, accessed by sculptural concrete steps that gently undulate into banquette seating and custom shelving. The result is a calm, unified space well-suited for a variety of purposes.

Sustainable design elements include high efficiency mechanical systems, durable long-lasting finishes, an upgraded thermal building envelope, and energy efficient LED lighting.
